Imagine, if you will, that your internet dies. Or you change ISPs. And it takes more then 10 days.
And I won't be able to play Eve, TF2, or any other online game. The Sam & Max episodes require an internet connection, and they're certainly not multiplayer. Where was all the complaining about that?

In this day and age, it is assumed that games will require an internet connection. If my internet connection is dead for more than a day, not being able to play Spore is really the least of my problems.

Yeah. They require you to sign in, otherwise you just get the demo.

Anyone who's thinking of buying either of these games, this may be worth a read.

My biggest gripe with this sort of thing is mentioned in this article. If the company goes bust there will no longer be any authentication servers. Ten days after that anyone without a pirated / cracked copy wil not be able to play the game again. Ever.

Bear in mind that I personally have never used a cracked exe. If this happened I would be either forced to never again use something I have paid for or I would have to learn how to use pirated software. So it's actually possible (though far-fetched) to see a situation where this anti-piracy software would introduce me to the tools used for piracy. It's then theoretically only a short jump from there to actual piracy.

Isn't the point here that after 10 days spore will cease to function at all, meaning you would have to buy the game again under a new account? All your other online games such as Eve and TF2 will still be on your system or steam list ready and waiting for you when you get the internet back, but Spore will have stopped functioning.

If I am understanding this correctly and that is what would happen then I find this just as absurd as thatbloke does. Say I went on holiday for a fortnight, I couldn't very well be able to keep my game alive over that time. Eventually you would be in a situation where you are without the net for more than 10 days.

It will cease to function until you have a working connection again.

I can't find the original thread quickly, but reading through BioWare's FAQ on Mass Effect and SecuROM:

BioWare said:
Q: What happens in the future if I want to play MEPC and EA has shut off the servers?

A: If that should ever happen, BioWare would address this problem.

The other thread said they'd release a patch that removed the SecuROM protection.

Its another example of ownership vs rental of a product. Games like World of Warcraft you never "own". You only rent/lease the right to connect to their server to play. Some games like Guild Wars have a semi-perpetual rental for a single fee, other games require fee renewal.

I know that microsoft is looking into this for Windows, as well as ad sponsored installations. The traditional idea of purchase equalling owernship is being replaced by the idea that purchase equals a right to use for a fixed length of time.

DRM is all about rental vs ownership and without scewing the discussion too far off track this looks like another DRM'esque scheme which should surprise nobody.

If the game is good people will buy it regardless of the protection is contains. When people are happy to give away their passwords for chocolate then its definately a renters market out there and too small a percentage give thought to their personal rights with regards to such things.

Almost makes one wonder if this was part of the plan all along.

EA Exec 1: Hey, how about we have some irksome phone-home all the time thing for Spore?
EA Exec 2: Nah, no one will like it. Everyone will complain.
EA Exec 1: But they're already complaining.
EA Exec 2: Good point. Ah, but, if we just pretend we're going to do it we can then rescind it at no cost to us and everyone thinks we're heroes for listening to the community.
EA Exec 1: Win!

Maybe they also think of this good old "Arabian Market" scheme, they start of asking for a ver utopical price and then come closer to the community's wish. And in the End they still get a lot of their idea through, with everyone thinking "oh thats so nice of them, that they moved in our direction" ...
