Little technical help, please?

No, it won't really do anything in a single core setup. Having it set incorrectly, however, may pose a problem, and perhaps that's where Q-man was getting at.

There wasn't an entry for it in my config file at all, so I stuck one in with a value of 1. Don't know if there was a difference, forgot to watch out for it...

As of patch 3.2.0, WoW can detect the number of cores automatically and take it from there. Adding the entry yourself will not have any sort of harmful effect, however, and since we're down to near desperate attempts to avoid reformatting the poor thing, why not?

Also, have you tried fullscreen as opposed to windowed yet?

Yus, although haven't had the chance to do it in a raid as yet. Didn't have an effect when out and about, other than hurting my eeeeeyeeesss

I'd suggest giving it a shot in any circumstances (other than raids) where your fps tends to commit suicide, such as Dalaran or (it's for the greater good, so no whining, please :D ) battlegrounds. The later are far more reliable as a test as you have a comparable number of players moving around. Wintergrasp tends to work as well, and I used it for finetuning settings on older systems.

Things are suddenly looking hopeful; earlier, my computer shut itself off, and I found the air inside a little uncomfortably warm. After a closer inspection than the last time I opened the case to check for excessive dust, I realised there was a horrible clump of dust stuck right in the middle of the heat sink. Dashed out to Maplins to get some compressed air, cleaned the entire rig thoroughly, and logged back into WoW; bam, 20FPS increase.

It looks a fair bit better now, but this WAS in Gadgetzan with nobody around. Hopefully I'll get to see if it'll noticeably affect my Heroic/raid FPS sometime soonish.

zing!

Hope it works out :D

You system/BIOS may have been underclocking the CPU in an attempt to keep the temperature low

Likely.

Thing is, I've cleaned it before, but I just never saw this increasingly nasty buildup in the middle of the sink, difficult angle to see -_-

Hoovering has usually worked for me, as long as you do it with care there are no problems, sar. Although, it sucks *cough* at getting dust out the middle of a heatsink. A compressed air/vacuum combo would do the trick in that case.

I belive he facepalmed 'cause most hoovers have a static ball at the end of the tube, and has a chance to burn out your circuits. (Unless its a low power hoover or somthing, i think.) correct me if im wrong.

That's why you should always blow, rather than suck ;)

Even when you blow, make sure your mouth is try. And bloke, i could turn that around EASILY, but i dont think you would appreciate it. ;)

Yeah, you're right. especially is, like most vacuums, the tube is made of a bendable polymer. It does tend to create a lot of static at the end of tube which, like Gombol says, can damage the hardware. It's also not unheard of for vacuums to suck up resistors on old parts when the wiring is run down.

Still, there is no perfect way to do it. I myself use a soft bristled paintbrush in conjunction with canned air and that's not perfect either but still better than a vacuum I reckon.

The Techhie im doing work experience with uses a paintbrush, along with blowing from himself (After he has dried his mouth) and very rarely a stupidly low powered vaccum (Although he said he would rather not use it if possible.)

Whoops! Then it's probably just good fortune that I haven't damaged anything yet. I think I'll try and steal some compressed air off one of the sparkies in work on monday, my CPU heatsink is getting clogged and it's a bit toasty under hood.
