Clue #2: Born in the 1950s, he is most famous for his debut album.
Clue #3: Despite his strong affiliation to Virgin Records, some of his work has been re-released under a different label.

I think it's safe to say no one is going to guess based on that one clue...?
Also, I would like to humbly request that people stop posting clues that could apply to hundreds of acts. They look like legitimate posts but all they do is keep the thread in wait mode for longer...

If anything, the thread's slowest point tends to be waiting days for people to post new ones. Usually once the guessing begins things get rolling quite quickly. I must admit, I had forgotten this had ended on my clue. I'll be more specific now so someone can get it in 3 guesses and then we can wait 3 days for them to post up a new one.
1) British band who started in the 50s.
2) Previously had a very famous solo singer as their frontman, before they split and had hugely successful separate careers.

Nope.
1)This band was formed roughly a decade ago and doesn't take itself too seriously, yet is far from a 'joke band'.
2)This band features 3 vocalists, allowing for some amazing harmonies. Their lead vocalist however tends to scream a lot.
