Are you trying to share the internet from your computer to your laptop, or are you using a router? So, are you doing

Code:
Internet -> Computer -> laptop

or

Code:
Internet -> Router -> Computer
               |
                -> Laptop

?

On your computer, you should only user one firewall at any one time. Using both the windows firewall and the norton firewall makes a mess of EVERYTHING. If you go into the Security Centre option in XP (SP2 only, but then you only get the XP firewall in SP2 :)), and click on firewalls, it should tell you this somewhere. Also, make sure that the windows firewall on your laptop is configured to accept internet sharing.

If you can, disable the XP firewalls on both machines (as it sucks), and get something like ZoneAlarm. There is a free version (which comes with a 15 day free trail of the Pro version) or a Pro version for ~?20/year. I like it, it works for me. Other people use other things.

Also, if you can, go to the network connection (the two computers flashing away next to the time), where it says limited connectivity, and double click it. Click the support tab at the top, and then Details. Copy everything you have in there for me, as it will tell me a lot more.

Cheers :),

If both machines are sharing an internet connection, disable norton firewall, if it still doesnt work, disable windows firewall also.

Connection sharing of any kind (like a home router) automatically acts as a firewall also, and you don't really need more than one.

El Diablo, i think windows will detect when norton is installed and not enable it's own firewall. Doesn't hurt to check though.

Indeed you are correct Pest, however, I've had to fix lots of windows firewall problems, the most common of which is when it turns itself on at the same time as other firewalls :(

Also, make sure you are using the correct type of cable. You need a crossover ethernet cable, not a straight through cable.

PC-to-PC connections should use a crossover cable.
PC-to-Router connections should use a straight through cable. (Though most modern routers (in my experience) seem to be able to cope with either now...)

My laptop
Dads laptop

and save them?

1) Static IP's
2) Dynamic IP with mac based reservation.

Choose your poison. If you want proper help then you'll have to post up full details of your ISP server (dynamic or static) and what routing hardware you're using for DHCP (I assume) at the moment.

I am assuming that you have some kind of router here??? If not, one of the computers (probably the main one) will need to be on all the time so that the others can get on if they need to...

So how are you connecting these pc's together??? I will assume here that the Desktop PC is the main one (always connected to the net) and that the Laptop is the one you are wanting to connect to the Internet, through the desktop one.

I have done this before, and it's quite simple to set up, however one restrictin here is that for you to get online, the main desktop will have to be on. Numerous times my parents switched off our main comp at home when I was playing online with mine, after forgetting to check with me first.

What you need to do is the following, assuming Windows XP is set up on both of them.

On the Desktop, you will need to have two ethernet cards (We shall call these card A and card B). Card A will be connected to the internet, and card B will be connected to the Laptop via a straight through network cable. Next, on the desktop you need to run the network setup wizard, located in start all programs -> accessories -> communications. In it, select the option (normally the first one) that is labelled something like "This computer is connected directly to the internet. The other computers on my network connect through this computer."

After this, follow the prompts, selecting which one of your LAN connections is the internet connection, and selecting which ones are connected to other computers. Knowing Windows, you may need to restart here.

After this step is complete, go into the network connections folder (from control panel) and make sure that Internet Connection Sharing is enabled on the LAN connection. If it is, you will see a hand underneath the icon. If not, right click your internet connection, select properties and navigate to the advanced tab. Make sure that the checkbox for Internet Connection Sharing on that connection is enabled.

Next, run the network setup wizard on the laptop. You need to select the other option here, the one that says something like "This computer connects to the internet through a residential gateway or other computer on my network"

Follow the prompts and let it do its stuff.

Then go to the connection on the laptop that is connected to the main pc and go to properties. Click on TCP/IP in the top box, and select Properties. Make sure that "Obtain IP address automatically" is selected, as well as the other option there to obtain DNS servers automatically.

Then, on the laptop, go the the network connections section. You should see a new globe-looking icon that is called something like "Gateway on X" where X is the name of the main desktop computer.

If it's there, you are online!

Find me on MSN or XFire if it doesnt work or you need further help.

Might be worth investing in one then.

It'll speed up your connection (kind of, like Physics and parallel vs sequance circuits)

Plus it'll manage itself better, you won't need to worry about firewalls etc.

____

If for whatever reason you can't afford a router, then I guess the static I.P is the next best option.

God knows how it works without a router, but basically Network Connections > "Hardware" > Properties > I.P -- Then assign one.

______

I'd still recommend a router though, especially as wired ones are rather cheap now anyway:
