New ISP for our new house...

Hey guys,

Me, Brad, Lith, Woogle and Amasia will be moving into a new house on 1st June (hopefully) and we need to start looking at new Internet Service Providers, as the once solid Tiscalli has teamed up with the always shit Talktalk and we dont want to carry on that contract!

Any suggestions on ISP's guys? What do you have and are you happy with it? Post as much info as possible, as we are gonna try and make the most informed decision we can as fast as we can! :)

Also, yep, i know i have posted this in the WoW forums, not the main one, that is deliberate, please do not move it. (I may create a thread there also depending on the content of this thread but for now this will do).

Thanks!

Hey, :)

Well, at home, I use TV Cabo, but it's definitely a Lisbon-only thing, so it wouldn't help you any. :D

On a more serious note, where I work, we're very happy with Colt. I assume you guys have Colt thereabouts?

Cheers,
J.

Nope.

I would suggest either Be internet (DSL), or if you want to get a TV package too then the Virgin Media CABLE service is quite good apparently (do NOT get the Virgin DSL service, though, ever). I've been on Sky broadband for 4 years with very few issues myself too so I would also recommend them, but Sky BB is only available to sky TV subscribers.

I fully agree, I left Be unlimited when I moved house, really good DSL provider and if close to the exchange up to 24mb fully unlimited. Though now I fully appreciate Virgin 50mb cable, its superb!

I've heard good things about Be, and I myself use Virgin cable, and am very happy with it, so I'd recommend either of those.

You 5 living together is going to be so damn epic.

If you're still living in Lincs then Virgin cable is pretty much your only decent option. If you're on one of the higher packages (20MB+) you shouldn't find much of a problem with the speeds either.

Been with Virgin on different contracts for the last 3 years in Lincoln and never really had a problem, as Spicy, Oblivion, or the Pirate can confirm :)

Its looking like Virgin ATM then, but weel have a housemate discussion on it and prob settle on the Virgin 50mb + phone line as together they arent much more than we currently pay for 'net and phone and divided by 5 its not much each a month.

Thanks for all the help everyone who posted!!!

Depending on who you live with (and by that, I mean what their, erm... "borrowing of films" habits are like), I'd be careful of Virgin cable (as said, their dsl sucks and never go with it). Virgin are one of the most active anti-piracy ISPs, and are doing lots to try and find those who use BitTorrent and the likes to break piracy laws. Mix that with a nice big helping of the Digital Economy Bill, and you might not have internet for long.

Now, this isn't a sure thing, but you can Google and find tons of articles on just what Virgin are doing, and what they are likely to do in the future.

I'm personally on Be Unlimited (24meg for £24) as I just want the speeds (me being the only high bandwidth user in the house), and I don't care about TV (never anything good on, imo) or phone (I pay the £10/month BT line rental but never, ever, make a call on it as I have my mobile). You can get slower speeds of Be if you want, but either way I highly recommend them. Excellent customer service (my internet died at one point, I got a text message from them 5 minutes later apologising for it, and telling me that they are working on it, 20 minutes later another message saying it's all fixed and if I any have problems just give them a call), a fair usage policy that is actually fair (40Gb/month in the contract, yet I've gone over that a good few times, several months in a row, and never had a complaint from them).

Just my two cents...

Thanks, elD, might have a gander at that.

I'm hardly a raving lunatic interwebs pirate the kind of which all the media groups are terrified of, but I'd be a little worried if I had an ISP that was going overboard on the anti-piracy stuff.

Also, what's up with the Digital Economy Bill? Haven't heard much about it in a while, but I guess it's still that three-strikes system?

i have be business broadband with a bundle of 8 static ips, we regularly hit 100GB up\down in a month and have no issues at all. all in it's about £32 with £10 for the ips iirc

I would suggest you also visit the site www.samknows.com, if you haven't already.

You give it your postcode and it tells you precisely what your local exchange can do - though if you go for Virgin cable then that's kind of irrelevant...

The Digital Economy bill did not get through Parliament in time. Sections of it will be re-tabled. Dont really think about it too much. It isnt important.
