Some quick initial thoughts, based on about 3 hours of playtime. The exact same thing I posted at BCG, in case some of you have read that already...

Edit: My specs, just for a heads up. AMD 2400+ XP, 1 gig RAM, ATI 9800 Pro. Game chose low detail for me. It looks ok and runs ok until I get 4 or 5 characters on the screen, at which point it lags pretty bad. But still not bad considering it's more or less the minimum requirements :)

The entire game smells of xbox. Great if you like giant interfaces, I guess.

Things that are dumb:
When I enter a bar, the AI of every single patron decided it would be a good idea to greet me. All 8 of them get out of their seats, and crowd me into a corner. I thought I was getting mugged.

After the mob said hello, one by one, I went and took a seat at the bar. I use the new drag/pickup key to slide a glass over to me. The patrons, most who have sat back down with their backs turned to me, start screaming 'THIEF!' the second I touch it. And, of course, they all stand up and run over to crowd around me again. I take the opportunity to grab the plate the glasses are sitting on and send them flying around the room (all the while being called a thief) and then I stand up, push my way through the crowd, and leave.

To get a feel for the AI, I decided to stalk one for a couple days. We spent most of that two days standing still outside in the rain.

Some arena hopefulls were sparring at 3 in the morning. They won't chat with me, so I turn around to leave. The sparring sounds stop, so I turn around. They're gone. Turns out they've teleported to their bedrolls and fell asleep in less than a second. Pretty impressive.

The swords use the same skill as my daggers? pffft.

I don't know what it's like on higher resolutions, but at 640x480, the inventory screen displays around 5 items on my screen at once. Real helpful.

There was some other stuff, but I totally forget what. No doubt I'll remember the next time I play.

Things I like:
Speechcraft. Lockpicking.

Picking up used arrows.

Casting spells in combat.

Breaking into a place, and having the owner notice you when you accidentially knock over a rack of swords. :)

You could've 'obtained' it the same way I have... My copy is shipping in with the parts for my new computer sometime in the next week or two ;)

Half-Life 2 dialogue in Oblivion!

Barney: I hear Doctor Kleiner's good with a teleporter.
Alyx: I heard he's good with teleportation.
Barney: That's what I heard.
Alyx: Good day.

Same on 1280x1024. It can however be edited (or download a mod) to display more items. Still, as BiG_D said, everything about the interface stinks of XBox, and I can't stand it.

Funny, those are the things I absolutely hate, and would like to kill the person responsible for these 'minigames'.

Face it BiG_D, the lockpicking sucks almost as bad as the persuasion.

Oh! Spin the wheel! Look at the bright colours! You are forced to taunt and intimidate every time, even if you don't want to! I don't want to play a crap minigame to persuade, I want to choose whether I want to joke, admire or taunt, and have it based on a number of factors like my skill.

lockpickings not that hard when you get the hang of it, and if you don't want to persuade people, don't! Just dress nice and have a high personality. And a "beguile" spell isn't all bad either...

I'm on my second character now, I did a thief first but it turns out if you rely on ranged combat you die (at least if you don't run into any magical weapons, which I haven't :()... So I'm on my second now, blade mage (custom class, all mage stuff apart from no illusion and blade instead, high elf and mage sign), and it's not nearly as hard. Plus, since the mage guild quests start off with you having to run all over the world, I've checked out enough caves to be absolutely loaded with magical items (although granted, I have to sell them to afford the spells...)

Im going to share with you nice story that happened last night. Ill copy and paste directly from my journal post.

Munn had to kill someone, anyone, for a task which I wont disclose to you. So he goes into this guy's (Boruz gro-Gash, or something :/ he was an orc) house and tries to kill him. The orc guys attacks with his bow. He gets the orc guy's health really low, but then he manages to run away from Munn and goes to tell the guard. Oviously, Munn gets owned by the guard when he chooses 'resist arrest' so it loads up at the last save point .. which happened to be an autosave outside the dudes door after munn tried to catch him after he ran away >.< So anyway, munn just ran to the city gate and left and came back in again. He was lucky, he managed to escape before the guy could tell the guard. So he comes back in again to finish the job. Goes into the guys house upstairs and kills him. Munn searches the guys dead body and finds 20 steel arrows. He tries to take them, but they dont disappear from his body. Tries a few more times. Nothing works. Bashes the button frantically, still nothing happens. So he gives up and tries to go away. ONLY to find that he is over-encumbered. 'How can this be?' he asks himself. I never managed to get anything from him. So he goes in and checks his inventory - Lo and behold, 1700 steel arrows! Turns out the guys body glitched and somehow turned into an infinite well of arrows. How odd.

Munn is my mate btw.

My own personal character is an out-and-out thief. They arent THAT hard docbot, you just need to duck n weave quite a lot.
I must say, going into Oblivion is helluva fun. Every time I find a new gate, I rejoice. Nothing beats sniping the imps with an arrow and watching them fly backwards into the lava. Also, I tried to roast an imp once in one of the jets of flame in the towers. It kills you (and the imp, but thats not really worth it, is it)

I thought the story looked a bit weird. I thought Munn was an NPC doing all that stuff, then I realised you were talking about yourself in 3rd person ;)

it's like this - you find lots of daggers and swords and other magical melee weapons, but I've yet to find more than one enchanted bow. So when they toss atronachs at me, werll...

also, facing more than one opponent at a time can be quite tricky as a thief (and as a mage too, but at least you have area effects ;) )

The "Exploding Fist of Boom" spell? Touch attack - 20-50 damage of frost, electric, fire, poison, and damage health each with a 20 foot radius and lasts for 5 seconds. The one way to be absolutely sure your enemy is dead :D

Worked great in Morrowind when I was surrounded but multiple enemies :) The downside was that it took a LOT of magicka and had a signifigantly low rate of success. But that's what all the fortify magicka and willpower potions are for :D
