PC gamer to PS3 gamer ??

Had my PS3 for just over 3 weeks now and have to report a few things:

1) Hopefully not tempting fate here but I do love the stability of the PS3 - played about 2-3 hours per day for over 3 weeks and not crashed yet !!!

2) Graphics drivers...sound drivers...patches....game settings..OS updates. forget that, just power it on, everything is done automatically and it plays at optimal setting everytime !!

3) downside, I am hopeless with JOYPAD at FPS !!, I am finishing close to the bottom on all FPS multiplayer maps - anyone know how long it will take me to transfer my keyboard/mouse skills to joypad controller?

Can't say for PS3 obviously but took me about 2 weeks of playing a fair bit of CoD5 on the 360 to get to a point where I could top most servers. Although I find the actually FPS ability of console gamers to be pretty low, I managed to do pretty well just by being more aware of what was going on and knowing where to use my nades etc.

Although all console players are perk happy. Always hated the perks in CoD and everyone actually uses them on console which I don't like.

PS3s do support USB Keyboards for text input - it may be worth looking at whether or not the games support a keyboard/mouse combo for input.

Regarding stability, I've had my 360 for over a year now and it's never died on me. Ever.

Also, when a patch for something DOES get released on PS3, I've found it to be HORRIBLY slow at downloading them. And I mean bad. About 4 hours just for a 100MB update is utterly shocking......

I've had many more issues with my xbox than I have with my PC. I have to install to hd on xbox otherwise the game will crash out. Have very few issues with my PC what so ever.

Yep. I think we all started that way with the joypad. The good news is that it does get better but you'll never (?) be at the pixel-perfect aiming that mouse+keyboard offers. That said, the dual sticks on the X360 joypad make for a different control mechanism, such that I can be looking one way while moving another and after a while that gets to be natural; made cornering in GTA4 a whole bunch easier.

I once heard it said that it takes 5000 repetitions of an action for your body to fully know how to do it. I imagine we've all passed that many times over for the mouse. I wonder how long that'd take for a joypad...?

I have to be honest, I found the transition between mouse and joypad to be seamless, it took literally no effort whatsoever for me to change between the two, and generally I like the versatility and simplicity of the joypad, there's only so many buttons on a joypad whereas with the keyboard, there's hundreds (probably an exaggeration but who cares :p) Sure, joypads aren't synonymous with precision, but they get the job done, and I find them to be very user-friendly.

Woah, that looks pretty neat, but it would probably confuse the hell out of me more than just using the PS3 controller.

Right thats me had my PS3 for five months now and thought I would report back.

I don't think the title of this thread is going to happen.

I have missed the complexity of PC games and got annoyed with the simplicity of PS3 games.

PS3 and PC each have their advantages and disadvantages (I will list a full analysis if anyone wants me too), but for me the PC wins.

In short, the PS3 is a toy (hence the word 'PLAY' in its name gives it away I guess) and PC's are for men who take their game playing seriously.

If you do get a chance to do a little breakdown of strengths/weaknesses of each and how they compare then I'd be most interested to read.

I tend to find I play on the console for different reasons than I play on the PC, though I gravitate back to the PC for the most part. I find that console games can be more tactile given the nature of the controller and games' design for that controller; sometimes that's a thing I appreciate. Other times, I just wish I had a mouse.

PS3 Pros :

1) Easy to use
2) More stable
3) No driver/patch updates to worry about – all happens automatically.
4) No viruses/malware/spyware
5) More comfortable to play, ie sit back on couch and relax. Also this makes it useful for browsing internet with other people around.

PS3 Cons:

1) Games simplified and generally quite simple/easy to play. For a mature adult this can lead to lack of challenge.
2) Most games don’t allow browsing servers for multiplayer.
3) Too many of the games focus on single player.
4) Controls not as slick/responsive, that includes PS3 mouse made by splitfish mentioned earlier in this thread.
5) Unlikely to get decent MMORPG like WOW, which Blizzard have already said they have no intention of converting to console. I can understand why because of the relatively short shelf life of a console.
6) Internet browser is very poor. For example you can’t view yahoo mail because of the encryption. Also you can’t view pdf files. There have been improvements over the past few months, like opening up to 6 windows at a time but still has a long way to get close to internet explorer.
7) Only really get 5 or 6 years at max then it is out of date.
8) Can’t text chat during multiplayer gaming (really annoying!)
9) Limited frame rate, most games 25fps or 30fps (or even less if processor is over worked!), with some games 60fps – but nothing over that!
10) Less people on multiplayer maps compared to equivalent game on PC, ie COD games.
11) More noticeable lag in FPS.

PC Pros:

1) More games available aimed at mature players which would be considered too complicated for children, for example EVE.
2) Controls very slick and responsive, ie FPS made for mouse and keyboard.
3) Clan matches/leagues easier to organise.
4) Easy to get involved in text/voice chat and forums for the games.
5) Silky smooth frame rates which you have control over by adjusting graphics settings.
6) Popular games constantly evolve over many years, namely Eve and WoW.

PC Cons:

1) Less stable
2) Can get viruses/malware/spyware
3) Hardware/software issues can be difficult/stressful and time consuming to fix.
4) Expensive to keep hardware up to date.

You can see why the PC wins for me with the higher number of PS3 cons and PC pros.

Maybe I am being a bit harsh on the PS3, and maybe if I was 20 years younger I would have thought it was better. If you have a PC which is up and running well then you have a massive choice of very high quality games at your fingertips from the very simple to the very sophisticated. If you are use to the standards of PC gaming then it may just be too difficult to compromise to console gaming. Ultimately the PS3 is a just a games console (albeit HD) with limited multiplayer gaming functionality and poor internet browsing. The PS3 is more for children or those who want to keep their game playing simple.

To be perfectly honest, I have to conclude you chose the wrong console. Revisit it in a year or two, you may change your mind.

I wouldn't say that the current generation has any 'right' console, but the 360 is probably the best of a bad bunch as it stands.

If there was somebody completely new to console gaming in 2009, I would recommend them to buy a PS2 and a bunch of PS1/PS2 classics and just forget that 360/PS3/Wii ever existed.

You're just obsessed with 'the way things were' really. A year after the PS3 finally dies, you'll be raving about how everyone should buy one of those instead of a PS4.

The PS3 is set to be the console to beat a couple years from now. Of course, that was also the case a couple years ago. Sony needs to get their shit together.

Obsessed? Well, maybe, but I would definitely say gaming was better in the past than it is these days.

If you think I'll be 'raving' about the PS3 then you are sorely mistaken.

You have to remember that the PS2 had a completely terrible launch as well. It wasn't a console worth owning until much farther into its lifecycle (unless you really wanted one of them newfangled DVD players.) I don't see how the PS3 will be any different.

Was there also another console that seemingly dwarfed it like X-Box 360 to PS3 style?
