I've daisy chained three cable modems off the same line before now :) highly naughty but worked just fine.

The stated reason is that quality of service cannot be guaranteed with more than one modem since it's operating from the same line, but as you say a line with a strong signal can support more. Getting them to set up the account, on the other hand, is the hard part... sales won't do it once they realise there's a modem already at the address. Although, you could maybe pick up a modem at Virgin megastores and do it by that method, but to be quite honest I wouldn't recommend it when it's so much easier to just use a router.

Step 1, sign up and get your modem
Step 2, get your mate to sign up and get his modem
<repeat>

Step X; you and all your mates bring your modems to the same house and use a splitter to plug them all into the same line.

Step XI; Whore until you are so blind you can whore no more.

Thank you everyone for yours thoughts. I'm going to experiment with ADSL24, after much review. Just getting my MAC key from F2S. I'll report back on how they are. I'm expecting a range of moderate-to-good over the first three to six months followed by a decline as they find they can't keep up with the demand but I'd love to be proven wrong. Maybe BeThere will have arrived in that time, for me?

I'd say stay clear of Tiscali, because the connection was crap and customer service was appalling. We also had a bad time with Sky, the connection came a month after we ordered it and and customer service was poor. On top of that, the connection regularly cut out and when we asked them to fix it they took a chainsaw to the line so that it didn't work at all.
