You need your own MAXes to counter their MAXes. There's nothing quite like getting a troupe in MAX armour to turn up, en-masse, to swarm an enemy base.

When I was playing before my computer fried, I had a similar problem at first. The one piece of advice I can give is to either run away when you see a MAX, or hide behind someone with either a bigger gun than you or a friendly MAX - it should shield you from AoE damage and the like. Anyone not wearing the biggest armour in the world seems to be easy enough to kill, as even the Scatter Pistol can take down someone in medium armour (although it is a weird shotgun pistol, so that may be why 
). From limited experience, I also found the Engineering skill quite useful, as you can repair your and other people's armour, so it makes hiding behind MAXes useful and protective.

Why can't I escape from twats in MAX armour? They ruin the game for little untrained me!
Haxed my way to advanced medic to save peeps and be useful, which was cool when there was about 15 people defending a stairwell and I could hear explosions in the distance. Then I missed my Galaxy ride and got bored running to the next point and getting gunned down by turrets

When I get my PC up and running again, i'll have to re-download it. I managed to tweak it so it ran properly and had quite a bit of fun - even if Haemo and Fluidic did run away and leave me standing, thinking 'what the hell?' a few times.
It's much more fun with a few people, my advice is to get a tank or something. If you're New Conglomerate like most of us, the tank is 2-man so that's a bonus! It also means that you can go nuts in a jeep and have someone spraying some lead while you do it. You only get 11 cert points with the free trial anyway, so you need more people to take the things you don't have.

I bought it from amazon £7, mainly because my mate(fluidic) from school got it too, although i thought it was a bit pointless gettting 3 months stait off, but then, he has a BR25/CR5 char
Me and fluid have joined an outfit, they have their own TS we'll have to play there, dont ask for squad lead and you'll be fine, ingame "/tell Sacarathe or /tell Fluidicspace" to contact us.

Now you can have all three empires per server (back in the day it was just one, then two when poeple complained). Meaning I can fulfill my MiniChaingun, Jackhammer and Lasher needs all in the comfort of the EU server.
