Real names on Blizzard forums

That authenticator (as used by MOD) was taking it far

Really? How do you figure?

Back to being serious, wouldn't this type of technology be of better use in chat rooms?

I'm a firm proponent of anonymity being the default and displaying your identity an option, when it comes to the internet, so I'd have to say no in most cases... I guess there could be some exceptions.

Also it's gone mental on Fark here

And here's an interesting article that shows how much Activision doesn't care about the actual games and the people that make them, including how they screwed up Blizzard - here

/Quote from Activision's CEO "The goal that I had in bringing a lot of the packaged goods folks into Activision about 10 years ago was to take all the fun out of making video games".

It just seems all rather hypocritical. Some folks here get quite pissy when they're asked not to use real names on the forums, and now everyone is all pissy because Blizzard is mandating exactly that?

How many people angry about this realID thing already have a facebook account? hmmm?

Search my name on the web and you will come up with diddly squat atm :p
Still do not like the idea of RealID in that way tbh. A universal handle for each person spanning over B-Net would be acceptable. But real names? And considering how many issues Blizzard have with safety overall when it comes to identities and accounts already? Plummeting toward the ground from 50.000 feet with no parashute contains more personal security tbh :D
And no. No Facepalm account here ;)
To say it like this: They already have our real names. And flame wars will not stop just because of the real name thing.
A more effective approach would be temp or even perm banning people from forum depending on how many repeats and severity of the post(s).

In the same way people can choose not to use Facebook in order to keep their identities secret or whatnot, they can also choose not to play WoW. Sure you don't want to give it up, but it's not like you're forced to display anything you don't want to - just quit. You can't voluntarily play the game and then complain about how it's run...

Hoy, :)

Er... you don't really have to give up the game... just the forums, which I really don't use, anyway. :)

Cheers,
J.

You can complain if you're playing the game and then they bolt on something like this after all the years of paying for the service, as far as I'm concerned. It's unecessary and it's downright stupid.

Lawl.

One World of Warcraft player, Jim Brand, contacted BBC News to say how disappointed he was over the change.

"I have been using the forums for over five years, reporting bugs and trying to be helpful. Now, to have the privilege to help people on the forums I have to reveal my real name; I'm dead against it," he said.

"I work in a charity and deal with governments officials. If they do a search and see I am a gamer, it could affect my employment prospects," he added.

Kinda ruined it by saying his real name in the report. ^_^

Publicity stunt much?

WoW haters gonna hate, how's life in the Big Space Spreadsheet?

Great news, although I'll be keeping my eyes open and my RealID disabled still... the facility is still there should they decide to re-enable it once the drama dies down...

Erm now who's demonstrating how closed minded they are - i don't even play Eve anymore ;)
I was merely putting the suggesting out there that Blizzard may have presented this all to the public in a manner that rouses up a lot of attention, then said they won't do it, only to later bring it in and be able to say "you were warned it was coming".

I doubt they had any other choice, they would have lost players in droves, hence money.

Good point made by Raazak about ensuring you disable the real-id option before posting or entering ingame.

The disabling RealID wouldn't have avoided the forum name thing, that would have been entirely mandatory and in no way avoidable. Point is moot, though, since they dropped the moronic idea.

Disabling RealID's main purpose now is to stop mods potentially drawing out your details and whatnot. Oh, and to stop people pinging you with invites you don't want.

They have access to your details anyway, no?

Blizzard do, yes.
The RealID data gathering via mods would be a way for -others- to get your Real ID (A.K.A: Your real name, which would be more of a security risk for several reasons)
