Rep - How does it work

Its not very important, but it has got me puzzled...

I have a Rep Power of 2, but I have 9 Rep points.
It also shows positive comments from 4 sources.

As you can see we have 3 different numbers, but which one is right?

Also, if somebody gives a +/- Rep, but leaves no comment, what happens?

Cheers

For part of your query, see here: FAQ

Basically your reputation power is how much you can affect the reputation of others. The reputation points are given to you by other users - the more you have, the better a user you are, as judged by your peers. The sources simply tells you how many different pieces of reputation you have gained.

If someone gives you rep but without a comment, normally the reputation will be removed, especially if nothing in the post is seen to warrant the reputation. This is, of course, at the discretion of the administrator/moderator.

Unless I am mistaken then..

I have received 9 positive rep points
Although only 4 have comments

The admins have cancelled out 7 of them

Which leaves me with a rep power of 2

Obviously i'm still puzzled

Looks like my sig was right after all

Actually, I think it means that with a rep power of 2, you can increase or decrease someones reputation by 2 (or two peoples by 1 each). This is separate from the rep points.

The rep points are where people have been impressed with things you've posted, and given you points from their rep power. You've been given 9 points by various users, but only four have left comments. The five which don't have comments may be deleted at the discression of a moderator/admin if they can't see a valid reason for it being awarded (as stated by DeZmond).

Still, there's not been any explanation of how your rep power increases. Best guess is that it's based in some way on the rep points you earn. Anyone care to confirm this and clarify just how it works?

No, the power and your reputation level are two entirely separate things.

Your reputation power is determined by a number of factors, like the number of posts you've made, how long you've been on the forums, etc.

Your reputation level is that given to you by other forum members.

An example: I have a reputation level of 4. That means, when I give someone positive rep, they get 4 rep points. The same applies for other reputation levels.

The reputation points I have (around 25) are an accumulation of those awarded to me throughout my time on the forums, various users contributing reputation.

Hopefully this makes things a bit clearer - it's not the easiest concept to grasp.

How do you know the rep was cancelled?

If I give you some rep you get 4 points because I have a power of 4.

If you give me some rep I get 2 point beacuse you have a power of 2.

The points given by other people only affect the little green/red box and what it has to say :).

EDIT

I so posted this before Wraith an Dez replied to Twisto!

That time stamp is a lie!!! :).

Ah you got in just before me!

Yes, your power increases by one point every 90(?) days and also every 100 posts or so. I'll try and dig out the official line on that for you.

But please note that this is not an excuse to bombard the forums with spam (like this post) :D

I do have one more question though. The icon to add reputaion points shows up for me on my posts. Does this mean I can increase my own reputation?

One way to find out...

EDIT: Nope! It gives you information about your reputation and any reputation that post has recieved.

According to the FAQ guide..
The highest level of Rep Power is 1000.

Therefore if somebody acheived this - They would give out 1000 Rep Points at a time.

Me again..

If there are already rules in place to stop mis-use of the giving and taking of Rep ( see FAQ ).
Then why should Admins have the power to cancel out any Rep given, and be able to do this in secret.

Also how can somebody with a Negative Rep, give out Positive Rep.

The system can't tell if you're giving out rep for a legitimate reason or not, it can stop some general abuse.

Once again my rep is not the same as my rep power. Right now I have 15 rep. This is how much I've recieved from others.
My rep power is 2. That is how much I can give to others.
Even if ronin strikes my rep to -15 with his admin skills, as long as my rep power is still 2 I will still be able to hand out rep like I was before.

If he strikes my rep power to 0, I would assume I can't affect anyone's rep until I earn a higher level.

There have already been cases of misuse of the reputation system by people, and this highlights the need to have the ability to remove awarded reputation if it has been given/removed falsely.

As for the negative rep giving out positive rep, I have no idea.

Also the maximum reputation level is extremely difficult to acheive. For a start, you'd have to be a member for decades, post ludicrous amounts of material, and be generally awed by the rest of the world.

So that'd be Ronin then?

u know what i think rep should be more simple than that! i mean if u post a intresting thread and someone likes it u shud get a point and if they hate it u loose one. like a rate it thing.

but then its just a thought. tell me to shut up if ya want:p
