[RIFT] Servers

Hmm, I looked at Rift, but didn't get into the BETA's (there were quite a few)

If I am to get it, and then pick one of these servers... What's the game actually like to play (you can compare it wow if you want to though I only played that up until TBC was released)

It's got enough elements that are similar enough to WoW and other MMOs from both before and after the 12-million behemoth to be... comfortable, easy to pick up and roll with, whilst having enough different to not be stale, and to feel new and exciting.

Compared to WoW, it's got more depth in many places (including how you set up your character's abilities via the "Soul" system; like talent trees, but you get to pick and mix from among eight trees for each class), and more convenience (AoE looting, hells yes). However, being brand new there are still a few things that need to be tweaked, but overall it's a brilliantly well-made game; it's taken five years for a game to pull me away from WoW, but this one managed. That and it's probably the most stable-on-release MMO I've ever seen, hardly any crashes or glaring bugs (just the occaisonal glitched quest, the actual class mechanics work just fine).

All in all, I'm finding it really fun, when I thought I'd finally burned out on the genre, and I'm not the only one; a fairly noticable chunk of the WoW guild moved over to Rift or are at least dabbling in it at the same time as WoW.

Albeit horribly imbalanced, but that's something which will hopefully be fixed soon enough, before they lose 1 of their 4 classes from it being hilariously underpowered.

I'd say it's not a case of us beng hideously underpowered, it's that cureently Clerics and Mages are currently locked into very few competetive soul choices, whereas Warriors and Rogues have a lot of choice and synergy between them.

Personal gripe with mages though is we're glass cannons with damp fuses. We rely too much on winning the proc lottery and sacrificing kittens in hope that the stars allign and we can burst someone down before they look at us (Even an angry stare is enough to pop us currently!)

Personally i'd prefer mages to be less reliant on these procs and warriors (Champions in particular) to have to play the DPS lottery, as currently their burst damage is merely dictated by cooldown..

Currently my main on Argent.

Derogon - 37 Cleric Ranged DPS/Healer/Tank...ish
Got various others, but none over 20 yet

Finding ranged dps a blast in PvE! Grinding through 5-6 same lvl "baddies" at once with Cabalist/Inquisitor/Purifier.

Absolutly loving the invasion events at the moment, what a great idea and way to gear up with Shards and Planerite.

i honestly thought i'd get pissed off with it quickly, but im finding i can't get enough at the moment!

Must get an invite to the guild, will whisper tonight for one.

Started playing this morning, currently lvl5 Cleric, Corenith on Argent :D
Will send out some whispers for a guild invite at some point, atm just learning as much as I can while trying to improve a sucky 10-15 avg fps :(

Well mine and Huungs mains are on PvP, think it just happened to be the sever the first person started playing on so the Haven crashed there.

But WPVP is actually a big part of rift.. well, not for you lot :p

Just sayin'

I refuse to be on Argent just because I don't want to be on a PvERP realm. On Cloudbourne with Vel, and a low level Pirate - pure PvP realm.

It's a shame we are all split up, and a tad surprising!

I picked the RP-PvP realm (Firesand) because as I learnt in wow, it combines the best of both worlds. PvP on demand, and less ganking from PvP kiddies.
Solemn & Bloke are also playing there. You all suck.

Plus we were on a wow PvP-RP server..!

Don't really wanna go onto a RP sever as i don't do/like RPing so i don't see a point to it.

Doesn't surprise me that we ended up split up tbh. I would never roll on a pure RP server, I find that whilst RP servers tend to have marginally more mature players, the better players avoid those servers like the plague, and they tend to be empty after the initial "free month" subscription ends.

I was on an RPPvP server in WoW purely because that's where the people who got me into the game were. Were I to return to WoW now, I would go to a server where I have other real life friends, and avoid the RP servers once again. Nothing against RPers, but the mindset held by most of the "hardercore" roleplayers isn't conducive to a raid or PvP environment.

Put simply: the dicks tend to be the better players, and are only dicks to those who aren't. Whilst this puts some people off, it makes others try harder to be respected. I prefer that mindset to a defeatist one.

I'm enjoying a RPPvE realm, its not a case you can't PVP at all, far from it, you can flag yourself as PvP and can attack others that also want a scrap/ attack a town etc. And theres still battle grounds.

Makes for better lvling, i prefer the option of being ganked, as opposed to just being ganked.

tbh, the wow guild seems to have found a home on Argent, perhaps we should have pre-release voted on a realm /captain Hindsight

Guess its just a good thing your not nailed to a shard and can spread characters around - not ideal, but meh

You need to check out the rift forums, plenty of hardcore PvP-only guilds looking for new meat on Firesand.

Also, hardly anyone RP's, it's just about trying to stay away from whiny brats imho. So we're playing against adult players, i.e. the more experienced and skilled ones, and the ones that are more liekly to play with honor.

Since when does playing on a PvP RP realm make you defeatist? Honestly not a lot I can say to that comment being as it makes no sense :p

Comments usually make less sense when taken out of context, yes.

There is still cross server interaction within WFs, so it's not as if you only play with those on your server anyway. I'm sure we'll see after this first month of free play which battlegroups end up being busy, and which die off. If, in that time I find my server is in one of those dying, I'll simply roll a new character somewhere else. With the level cap as low as it is it's not a problem.

I didn't say it was defeatist to play on an RPPvP realm, I said the attitude of "he's a dick to me I give up trying to be good" is defeatist. I also didn't link that to RPPvP servers; I merely stated you are more likely to find these dicks on pure PvP servers, and this is why they tend to have the better players.

Neither maturer nor older players are necessarily better than someone younger - someone terrible who's been playing games for years is still terrible. If anything you tend to find those who've been around a lot more games tend to whine far more as "they miss this aspect" or "they miss when this factor of the genre used to be difficult" etc. SSL was the 'moaniest' server I ever played on in any game.
