Space Marine Demo!

So due to some sort of Jiggery Pokery going on with Space Marine's current availability on Steam in the UK, you can't install the demo for it in the usual method (by finding it in the store) and if you attempt to register on the Space Marine website, you will be given a code but on attempting to redeem it in Steam, it tells you you already own the game, however it's not in your list!

There is, however, a very simple workaround.

Simply copy and paste

Code:
steam://install/55410

Into your browser's address bar and hit enter. Steam should then pop up and say that it wants to downlaod 2.2GB of demo :)

Note that for this to work, you need to have Steam set up to handle "steam://" protocol links in your browser - instructions for doing this will be different per browser so if it's not working you'll need to search for how to set it up in your browser :)

Actually Sokahr and myself got the demo working fine, you just have to approach the website from a certain vector and then registration works, though it does throw its arms up in the air and declare how all of it's html is broken.
Then on the forums is a thread explaining how to redeem.

It's an okay demo, highlights the gameplay quite well but is very short so hard to get a feeling for the pacing or progression.
Multiplayer is still very elusive however, with few details confirmed, and there's no further word on the co-op other than "about a month after launch".

That said, i have pre-ordered the pc collectors edition from HMV as its the cheapest i could find in the UK.

I got the PS3 demo.
Looks good but I can see the potential for this to become repetitive very quickly.
Would like to have seen a multiplayer section in the demo.

Had my eye on this for a long time. I'll say i'm impressed at how its changed from the early versions of the game i've witnessed at gamesday. Its come a long long long way to what it is now.

I could spew up my fears for what could bring this game down in my eyes but honestly i know i'll buy it. Even if the game is nothing more than 6 hours of a marine slicing up varying shades of orc boyz i honestly dont care. Any multiplayer or co-op stuff will be icing on a delicious slaughterous cake.

I played the demo last night, it was VERY satisfying wading into a group of orks with a chainsword and just mashing everything in sight :D

Indeed, but then anyone who hasn't realized that high-street retailers are bad for the industry needs an edumacation in the current setup in the games industry.
GAME also have an offer on this saturday that if you go into a store and say "brains!" to a staff member, you get a 10% discount on new titles including space marine...

That'll be handy, my GAME in Edinburgh, it has a load of Sold Out titles, a few things from 5 years ago, and all of the sims, which basically make up the "Top PC gaming chart"...
fun though the demo was I guess I'll be waiting a while, probably forget about it and then get it cheap in a sale at some point.

every GAME store I know locally has stopped selling PC games, aside from WoW and The Sims

GAME is not cool.

Its basic desperation. Game have been heamorraging customers for years now. Especially in the PC department. I think its really funny how Game cut their PC games sections down to one rack in almost everyone of their stores about 6 years ago and then look shocked when all the PC gamers disappear. They tailored their business model around getting the console crowd and they arent paying the dividends they want anymore. Tough. You've made your bed game.

Honestly if they are going to start picking competing companies to blame for their failing sales they are going to have a huge list. If they think screwing over steam is going to help them then they are really really in trouble. I'm not even buying Spacemarine from either one. Both charge far too high a price on release day. Other major online stores are undercutting Games price by almost a fiver.

The old guard have to go. For physical retail to stay competitive, it has to offer something that the internet does not, and adapt to the times, rather than turtle up, cry, and stick its head in the sand.

Let's look at a few personal examples of things I buy:

Games: PC games come from steam. Console games come from amazon/play/wherever is cheaper. I don't buy from game.

Steam has incredible convenience in managing my games, and keeping them updated via patches etc. Amazon and play tend to be very, very cheap.

Game has nothing to offer me. It's expensive, I'd have to leave my chair to buy something there. The staff are crap. If I asked them to recommend me a game, I'd get recommended Halo, or whatever the current flavour of the week is. They have no pc section at all.

Books and comics: These almost invariably come from Forbidden Planet. THey keep fully up to date on comics, and collate almost all the books I'm likely to want to read without having to brave the twilight pushing waterstones. THey are up front and honest when something is out of print or difficult to acquire. They often have offers to shift stock, as well as having signed books at regular prices or less as promotions. I can discuss what I like and get suggestions from people who ACTUALLY KNOW ABOUT AND CARE ABOUT WHAT THEY DO. I like giving them my money.

Models: Mostly these come from Maelstrom or Firestorm via the internet. Both of these offer excellent service, 15% off retail price (at least) and have a ludicrous range of stock that a Local Game Store can't offer. I would easily support a local gaming store if I had one in soton (if it was good), but I am at least safe in the knowledge that both these internet behemoths support their own brick and mortar stores.

I used to order from Wayland, but they started to really piss me off because they don't have any indication if stuff is in or out of stock. They claim everything is in stock, and just don't ship the order if it isn't. With maelstrom and firestorm, you normally have an up to date estimate on product they ACTUALLY HAVE AVAILABLE.

Sausages
: Whilst I'm happy buying most stuff at the supermarket, when it comes to sausages (and most meat) I take a trip to the local butchers. I get far superior product at very reasonable prices, in addition to priceless banter and supporting a local business.

Unless exceptional i no longer pre-order games for more than £24.

This year i have preordered 4 items:

Shogun 2
Portal 2
Dead island (£24)
Battlefield 3 - From GAME lololol

Pc game prices fall far to rapidly to pre-order games you wont play, that said, console games stay far above the pc pre-order prices for years.

Butchers all the way for Sausages.
