Spending a week in London

So the basic idea is that my girl and I want to spend 3 days in London at the beginning of October and we have no idea where we could stay.

So I want to know from you:

Do you guys know any hotel or something alike that does not cost too much and yet is a nice place to stay in? (We don't wanna sleep in a dirthole)

Booked well in advance and only expecting something very basic but otherwise clean and business-like, something like the Travelodge might suit. Could be around £40/50 per night. Don't doubt there's cheaper and/or better, but that'd be an emergency fallback.

If I were you I'd try and find something outside of London itself. Train routes into London are pretty good and you can be in the country side within a 30min train journey. I'd say try and find a B&B near a train station and hop on the train each day. I've not lived near to London for a while so as to exactly where to aim for either do some research or hopefully someone can suggest somewhere for ya.

When I stayed in London (mind you, this was 3 years ago? maybe 4) I stayed in a youth hostel. The place was clean, had caffeteria with fresh stuff each morning to have breakfast in if you wished to have it, there was a kitchen on site that you could use to make your own meals. I stayed in a room that was designed for six, but was alone, so had all the comfort I needed - then again I really don't require much, this was basically just to spend nights (two of them) so if you require more than a bed and some table you might want to look elsewhere. One night cost me 18quid. I can't find the particular one I stayed in (was a bit east to Canary Wharf iirc) but any should do.

I would suggest checking this website out.

Myself and a friend found a nice little B&B on there that was about 10-15 mins away from London Victoria train/tube station, got a double room for about £50/night

Don't forget you'll be paying train tickets (which pre-10am are stupidly priced) on top of whatever you get if you stay outside/away from London. I would definitely think about getting Oyster cards for each of you (any "large" station like Waterloo, Victoria, etc., with a ticket office will sell them for £3 deposit plus whatever money you put on) for when you travel around London on the tube or buses. It's almost always cheaper than getting a travelcard or similar (unless you have young persons cards and don't mind waiting until after 10am). But yeah, trains into London will be extra money. For 3 days you won't want a week ticket. I pay £12/day non-season ticket for travelling 30 minutes into London a day. That's 30 minutes to go from Sunbury to Wimbeldon (which is helpfully a "London Terminal").

So, you know, just warning you.

Depending on what you want to do in London and where you will be spending most of your time, I'd do as Ronin says and get a TravelLodge/Premier Inn near to where you want to be to cut down on travel time and cost, person. Booking in advance will be good. Try lastminute.com as well. You can get somre pretty reasonable prices on some pretty nice places. My girlfriend and I have done that in the past.
