It needs to happen, though. :p The quicker you can get everyone talking, the better chance the innocents have to win.

Statistically, the innocents must start voting, even blindly, as they have a limited number of chances to kill wolves, where the wolves are guaranteed kills on innocents each and every night. Ideally, you'd vote with some knowledge, but practically you're voting (on the first night) with no real idea what's going on. That's just the way it is.

I have been musing on a variant that gives everyone three pieces of information about the other characters: one true, one lies, then something else perhaps random or maybe either way... just to change the information landscape for the first day. It's not an easy business re-engineering werewolf, though.

I was considering there being two days starting where two people are killed off (NPC's) but the second day people being allowed to start talking, not sure if it'll make much of an impact but it might help the getting people started and into character before the killings happen!

The general rule of letting an NPC be killed off the first night is quite nice to let the villagers start talking, and make sure no one doesn't get a single day at least. The problem with giving the villagers 2 days (or other advantages) is that you make it more difficult for the wolves.

There is a sort of reasoning behind the "7 villagers, 1 wolf; 8-11 villagers, 2 wolves; 12+ villagers, 3 wolves" layout that gives the game a pretty standard length, and gives the villagers chances to play the day, while still giving the wolves the ability to win.

I'm not saying that you shouldn't try and mix things up in order to increase the enjoyment of players. I'm just saying won't someone please think of the wolves?

I meant as more of a prequel to the wolves appearing in where ever we host this game, so people get time to introduce their characters before we start playing or what have you

Maybe no killings on day 1, NPC kill on day 2, and then player lynchings happen on day 3 etc

I'm all for more roleplay...

As Piacular once pointed out to me, the visceral pull of the game is in two places: first, engineering who dies in the evening and second finding out who dies in the morning. The RP angle gives people something to do in the middle but the punch points in the game are those. I'd suggest just a single NPC death as a result.

Also, what elD says about this making it harder for the wolves is entire true. And, effectively, a lynching the first night is blind regardless and nothing changes for the second night if an NPC dies, so either the innocents abstain both times (not a good plan) or vote mostly randomly two times with no real test on wolf reactions in between...

I agree with that, which was why I was thinking we just let everybody get into character in the first day, or atleast those who want to get into character, maybe not even make it an official day... Then day 2(1 of game play) NPC is lynched and the blame games can start. When people are introducing their characters (this could even be done in the sign up thread) no one has yet been told they are special / wolfs and can't use their abilities.

Then on night one an NPC is killed starting off the game.

That's a bit harsh, lynching someone before anyone has been killed at night!

Ok, NPC is kiled by wolves on night one, starting day 2 with people voting for the lynching, it may get people more talkative due to having the day before without any finger pointing etc, possibly see a change in peoples attitudes or what not ;)

so day 1 - people introduce their characters
night 1 - NPC dies
day 2 - we start blaming each other
night 2 - lynched person gets killed

At what point do people get told what roles they have?

The night of tetsuo's death, something like elD's last game where he told the people about it as they happened to start killing someone

The gods are bored. They hunger for excitement and interest to fill the void inside them. Looking down on a remote township on the northern shore of Loch Katrine, the gods decide that a game is in order. A game that will change the morals, virtues and minds of those living there. The gods have decided to plague Haven Heath with a peril. No! Two perils! You two.

The gods smile as they infect the blood of Traxata and Wol with the curse of the beast. Smile at the forthcoming play that will amuse them so.

Traxata and Wol (you two, you idiots) are Werewolves! You are to use cunning and confusion during the days to hide your true nature, and turn the townsfolk against each other. A vote will be cast at the end of each day, and the town member with the most votes will be killed in an amusing, er... humane, way. During each night, you are both to PM me with your choice of who you wish to kill. During the night, you will both attack that person, and attempt to kill them. If you are successful, the town will find that person's remains the next day. If the Guardian Angel steps in that person will be protected from your attack. But, luckily, the Guardian Angel can't protect themselves too well!

You can talk to each other as much as you like during the day and night, but still only talk in the town square (via the thread) during the day. If I receive differing votes from you, I will randomly choose who to kill. If one of you dies, that person can't vote to kill any more. If both of you die, you lose the game. You win the game by bringing the population of the town to 4 (including yourselves).

Edit:

okay it wasn't that message :p, will combine the two when they get sent to wolfey bastards!
