There must be some hope for art!

I shall just make a little addendum here.

Once again those Google Spiders have come in handy after I spotted one of the little beggars browsing haven's Porcupine Tree thread. So I listened to a couple of tracks, sounded great, and then went out and bought Metanoia - an improv album (the only P. Tree cd i could find in HMV at the time) and loved it.

They have released a new album recently entitled Fear of a Blank Planet. I think it's excellent; great lyrics and some fearsome guitar riffs. Especially love the 17-minute long Anesthetize, a fantastic prog rock track which starts out sedate and grungy but has some short bursts of heavy guitar-bashing riffs in there too.

Danke, haven!

New Music -

Burial - Released a new album, Untrue, late last year. It belongs to the relatively new dubstep genre, which is apparently a hybrid of ambient, D n B and breaks, interspersed with fragmented vocal samples. What it amounts to is a really textured, dark and percussive sound environment which weaves beautiful atmospheric soundscapes, often conjuring images of dark alleys, backstreets of seedy, corrupted cities, hard drug use and social isolation, with enough of a beat and rhythm to keep it moving along. Really clever use of samples, too, especially the empty bullet-casings and what sounds like a cigarette-lighter 'click-click' on 'Near Dark'. Sometimes you find the same samples used on several tracks, and it annoys me that it's noticeable, but they really do work very well. Great production. Well worth a listen if you enjoy dark ambient, IDM or even trip-hop style music.

Justice - Maybe more of you have heard of them than I think, but Justice are a French electro house outfit consisting of two members, Gaspard Augé and Xavier de Rosnay. Sound familiar at all? Well, it should, because they are very similar to Daft Punk. Their album, 'Cross', was released summer last year. Very similar sound, but a lot more in-yer-face with the dirty electro synths and pumping bass, sometimes you can catch glimpses of a Chemical Brothers style influence in there. Personally, I'm not a great fan. Mostly because the sound is a little too familiar and pop-ish, which is also why I don't rate Daft Punk all that much, but I think a few of you in here would really enjoy it.
The vocal tracks, including their single, 'D.A.N.C.E.', 'DVNO' and especially 'Tthhee Ppaarrttyy', pass me right by I'm afraid, but Let There Be Light, Phantom, Pt.s 1+2, and One Minute To Midnight are close enough to prog. that I can listen to them. Like I said, Daft Punk fans definitely have a look in.

and whilst I'm at it:

The Field - The Field definitely deserves a mention, but I doubt many of you Radio 1 freaks will find him remotely interesting :D His album from 2007, 'From Here We Go Sublime', is one of my favourite albums currently. His sound is very minimal techno, with more than enough repeptition to drive most of you absolutely bonkers, but in an obscure way it manages to hold my interest for longer than most other straight-laced electronic albums. Although the critics really lapped this one up, I think you should approach with caution :p Try it if you like progressive, techno or even downtempo mood music, but I can't make any guarantees :D I'd say if you like it, you'll love it!
Also released a new EP of sorts in February 2008 entitled 'Sound of Light'. More of the same stuff from the album basically, I love it :D

Aye, I know :D But I liked the premise of this thread, and thought I might as well use it rather than create a whole new one to die out.

The only form of artwork that matters to me= CARS! I have to agree with Tet about the hit and miss issue with the latest Ferraris. Some are a visual masterpiece whilst others leave much to be desired. In spite of this, I have to say I love the F430 and the FXX (manic looking, but cool :D) I do, however have to disagree with Tet about lamborghinis and the takeover by Audi. Sure, I preferred their cars before Audi took over, but the Murcielago is one of my all-time favorite looking cars http://www.varnavto.com/hqwp/widescreen/2006_lamborghini_murcielago_lp640_2.jpg I mean, how can someone look at that and not like how it looks? :p Wouldn't mind starting a new topic here for diluting the conversation on art. Apologies to all those who wanted a focused thread. :D

The Murcielago is nice, but it's just not completely bonkers Lamborghini. I still reckon the Lamborghini Diablo VT Roadster is the most beautiful car I've ever seen, even the newer version (under Audi) looked gorgeous, but the Gallardo and the Murcielago are a bit too refined for me to love them over the Diablo. The Lamborghini Reventon looks a lot nicer, though, even if it is a bit tacky. Brilliant alloys. Shame they went all angular though, rather than Diablo curvaceous.

Hmm, ok

Film: The Matrix - Inspired a new generation of paranoid philosphers

Music: Poets of the Fall - the guys that did the Max Payne theme "Late Goodbye". Very artistic lyrics and vids.

TV: Heroes. So many intricately interwoven threads makes it an artform in my mind.

Game: Bioshock. An entire alternate world centred on morality, philosophy and pathos. And a bit of horror.
