So, with TeamSpeak back and running and (as far as I can tell) doing a perfectly good job, it's time for an update on how things are looking on the forums and shoutbox front.
This is going slower than anticipated but partly because we're discussing how it's really best to support THN around this than just diving headlong in.
Ultimately, we'll make choices on
technology that make it easier to develop and maintain THN while hopefully maintaining the sorts of
features that you guys n gals are looking for.
It seemed, at first, that the logical choice was an update to vBulletin 4. Except that I'm not convinced that this is a good development line any longer. None of the original developers work for vBulletin any longer and their development line has become separated into multiple products without good control of their core. Add to that the fact that I'm fairly tired with vBulletin's oddities and difficult to manage templating system. Feels like time for a change.
And that's where we've gotten a little bogged down.
It's possible that we'll look at a migration to
Xenforo, which is what all the core vBulletin developers founded around two years ago. It's also possible that we'll head back to
phpBB, which some of you may remember us running way back in the form of IntegraMOD. The former should be easier to maintain and require less hacking, but the latter is free to acquire (though TCO in terms of time is a different matter).
Personally, I'm erring towards Xenforo. They look like they've got their templating more sorted, they've got some good mods that'll support things we like to do, or want to do better (including shoutbox and/or IRC integration). But it's not a done deal yet. Hang in there and we'll get something suitable sorted. It seems likely that this'll slip into beginning of March, now, but we'll get there. And hopefully you'll all be able to choose a colour other than blue in future...
