TWEWY was really frustrating, I hated the combat so didn't play it more than 2 hours.

I'll somewhat agree with that. Combat had some sort of weird-ass completely backwards learning curve. They took all the features that made it easier to experiment and learn how it works, and then made them things you don't get til later. Seriously, if your game is going to have the ability to flee from fights that you lost, why the hell don't you give that to the player when they're struggling through their first few fights? The only time I ever got a Game Over was on Day One. Something about that isn't right.

In any case, I found everything else about the game incredibly compelling, so I pushed through. The combat does pick up, and actually becomes very interesting in the later stages.

Anyway it still won't be as good as [...] VI..

Ain't that the truth, FFVI was brilliant in almost every aspect, especially how the characters stuck to unique 'jobs', a system which was only brought back in FFIX. Sabin, Cyan, Gau and Shadow were the ultimate strikeforce, but I liked Celes and Terra as well for their characters and Edgar for his tools ... ahhh, I liked em all!

By the way, the best JRPG I've ever played for alternative combat is Tales of Symphonia on the Gamecube. I still prefer traditional turn-based, but if you're one of those people that can't stomach it then the real-time hack n slash combat in ToS would be ideal. It's a great game overall, in fact, the only drawback is the ludicrous prices it goes for on ebay these days.

Cheers for the thoughts guys... been enjoying the change of pace with the XBox360 compared to the PC, although one thing has been niggling..... Wireless Adapters. What have you guys done to get connected... and is it me that £60 seems alot.

(Btw bought Mass Effect for £10 and enjoying that although got to Benezeria at lvl 14 and hit brick wall and decided to start another char.)

Don't buy the adapter from Microsoft. FOR THE LOVE OF GOD DON'T BUY THE ADAPTER FROM MICROSOFT!

Much better off snagging a cheap wireless router and flashing some better firmware on it. It's cheaper, AND more versatile if you find the need to have something else wirelessly connected in the future.

If you're not comfortable with that, it might just be worth it to run an ethernet cable to the xbox.

But don't buy the official adapter. It's extortionate. :(

That's what I thought.... Problem is my router is in the back bedroom and my xbox has been shall we say on the move a bit, sometimes downstairs sometimes upstairs.......

Might look in to that Big D thanks.

Don't hesitate to ask questions, bricking routers is fun but rather costly :p

Everything that D has said is absolutely correct, it's utterly ridiculous for it to be 60 frigging quid, but if you're bent on buying the Microsoft merchandise, I've seen it for 47 quid on amazon. Another option if you have a laptop is to bridge the wireless connection from your laptop to your router and allow sharing, then simply plug an ethernet cable from your laptop into your 360 and you're set! The general idea is to save you the cost of buying anything, but you can also put your laptop on a low power state so you're not burning all those hydrocarbons!

Yeah, I just picked a play.com parcel out of my letterbox there with no idea what it was I'd bought. Upon opening the surprise package, imagine my mingled shock, awe and delight when the words 'Tales of Vesperia' peeked out above the brown wrapping. Just played a little bit there and it reminds me instantly of Tales of Symphonia, except all high definition and gorgeous.
I made the recommendation of Tales of Symphonia to you a few posts back. Well, since I highly doubt many of you have a Gamecube anymore, and those that do won't want to pay the ridiculous ToS prices on ebay, I recommend highly upon highly that you BUY TALES OF VESPERIA. Including you, D, since it eliminates a few of the traditional JRPG 'inheritances', like no random battles and real-time combat. As far as you are concerned, thatbloke, this has to be a must-buy.

Just to clarify, I haven't played hardly any of it yet, but such is my faith that it will be incredibly good.

Since it comes out tomorrow, Eurogamer haven't actually done a review of the UK version yet. BUT WAIT! They reviewed a US import version (virtually the same game) when it came out in yankland last year. Here it is for your extreme viewing pleasure: Eurogamer's Tales of Vesperia (import) Review

I have owned this since Tuesday - had an hour and a half on it so far and loving every second :)

It's like an interactive Anime Movie!

Or it could be done in a Naruto style series where they have a fight stretching across 7 episodes or something.......

The combat system seems a little weird at first but I'm sure it wont take me much longer to get used to it :)

Because they wouldn't make anywhere NEAR as much money on it.

And so people like me who bought a decent console rather than a bluray player with a games console attached can enjoy it too :)

I have both, so I rise above the petty xbox / p3 debates ;)

I'm only frustrated because it has delayed a game I wanted out sooner (not because I'm a disillusioned sony fangurl *cough* solemn *cough*).

I'm glad you're enjoying it! I haven't had a chance to play it yet, STILL trying to fight my way through Dragon Quest (excellent game, though. Just a lot deeper than it's cartoony style and light-hearted story would have you believe!) but I will get around to it eventually.

The combat, by the way, get's awesome after you learn 4 or 5 techs and you can chain them together. It turns into more of a beat em up than a traditional RPG battle, which actually makes it great fun to get into fights.
