Title says it all. A poll of 25,000 people from 35 countries voted th UK as the best country in the world. (But the British are the most boring people apparently  )

That's a great idea. I'm having my name changed to '25,000 people.' That way companies can drop me some cash and then be like "25,000 said that our product is the best."

It'll work! Really!

I read a different article in a printed magazine that was rating the top twenty cities in the world (to live in). I seem to remember that none of them were in the UK. I think Vancouver (British Columbia, Canada) came out top.

25000 people seems like an awfully small percentage of the worlds 6 billion population. And it doesnt exactly say how the population was chosen. i dont like this sort of surveys :(

Ditto, the news is always full of "surveys" or "studies" with all sorts of results. We get the same over here with the Netherlands elected best, or having the best facilities, et cetera. There are proper studies comparing the quality of living in all nations objectively, iirc France topped the list.

They obviously didn't interview any British people in their survey.

Plus this is just a survey of countries as a "Brand". Great we have a pretty face but the rest is going to rot. Thank god for comsmetic surgery.

This country really isn't "Great" at all.

It's because we're too surprised. We used to celebrating the fact that we're totally rubbish, ;) so the fact that we came top in something comes as a shock. :O

I'm not proud of Britain, or England or whatever. I really feel very little patriotism and never have. When I fought wargames at school it was "my mates versus the bad guys" not "England versus the Nazis". When I get sufficient funds together (not for some years) I'll move away, possibly to Canada or New Zealand. My attachments here are only people and inertia. Much of what I do I can do from, well, anywhere... I don't even like the weather here!

For me the UK is roughly zero sum, certainly nothing worth being proud of. I have a sufficiently low opinion of global politics that I struggle to think of a country that I would feel proud of, but I can certainly think of places with better weather or better internet access, and those I can enjoy every day.

My opinion on the problem with the UK is that choosing a government is more like choosing the lesser of two evils rather than choosing a good government. The different political parties are all good at getting certain aspects of running the country right, but they cant get it all right...

And so the THN political campaign began...

Seriously though, I suppose you are right - the political parties we have a are quite naff. Why can't anyone stand up and do the right thing? I mean, we all know lying is part of politics, but can they cut down on it a wee bit? :p

But why should it be......

Not into politics much myself jsut remember reading Tom Clancys books where Jack Ryan becomes president. He gets people who actually know the different areas to be part of his "group" and a lot of the stuff made sense. But the people in the partys hated him for it.

Some point there but not sure what.

The right thing by who? Given limited funds if you help one thing you may not be able to afford to help another. Should we be putting money into food for the third world or money into our National Health System? How about pulling money from Defence to put into schools, knowing that Defence is one of our biggest employers so less money equals less jobs equals higher unemployment? Should we focus funds on scientific endeavours or maybe we should put money into cultural understanding campaigns? It goes on and on and on.

I have no idea how anyone makes a serious change to anything in a civil service lead democracy such as ours -- everything is predicated on everything else being just so, and moving one means you need to move, well, everything else and hope it all turns out okay. At least in a dictatorship you can count on getting good stuff if you tow the line. UK Democracy? Mediocrity for everyone! [small]Unless you're willing to step on heads and hands and weasel your way to the top of the financial ladder, of course... that's the nod to free market economy for ya.[/small]

I find that a bit hard to believe. In a survey I saw, London was voted very near the top. It nearly always is in these kinds of surveys.

Interesting how you brits arent proud of yourselves at all. Very unbritish chaps. :)
I don't know what you mean by that, we're British, not American. You don't really see people flying the Union Jack here, we aren't huge patriots, quite the opposite in my opinion.

I wrote a longer reply, going into politics, but I think I'll leave it at that. I do hate politics. :)
