UK officially the best country in the world

I'd agree with you the American patriotism _we_ get to see is unhealthy by our standards (That's still a legacy of WW1,2), but what you guys seem to do is outright resent your nation, surely there is something good about living in the UK? I'd probably prefer it over Uganda, to name a random one. :)

Erm, well... let me see... do you like rain? And indeed, worse weather?
Do you like obesity?
Do you like an inept central political system and equally inept political parties?
Do you like living among the land of the depressed, for the reasons stated above?

If the answers to these questions are yes, come and live in the UK!

id rather live in the UK than anywhere else, the weather is crap and so are the imigration laws, but other than that i like it

Aye the UK is nice, so long as the penchant for wearing sporting clobber, baseball caps and bling doesn't spread :).

Failing that, I'd trade the mundane suburban lifestyle for the excitment of Uganda anyday... :p.

Rain, got that here, i can live with it, worse weather would be a problem.
Obesity? It could be worse, and i suppose it depends where you live, lower class or upper class, rural or urban, etc. Anyway, as long as they don't want anything from me (*shudder*) there's little wrong with it beyond healthcare concerns.

Inept political system? I'd prefer it over Uganda and most of the rest of the world any day, and seriously, it's not like they're greedy corrupt bastards hoarding everything for themselves and leaving the people to rot. You can vote them out and you've got more than two parties to choose.

Land of the depressed? Name me a place where everyone is happy. Oh wait, i know one, it's called Utopia! ;)

It's certainly not worse than the Netherlands from what i see, read and hear, and i think life is fine here. Get a little perspective and see how lucky you are to live in western europe.

Yes, but what happens when you are only choosing political parties on the merit of "who do I hate least?". Welcome to the UK. And also, we're getting crazy new legislation like ID cards, and terrorism legislation as well... it's pretty overbearing and there's not a lot we can do about it.. so many people don't care or don't understand issue that they vote yes to anything.

Get a little perspective and see how lucky you are to live in western europe.

When you put it like that, I do have perspective - there are many places that are worse, but there are places that are much better too. What's wrong with desiring a little change? ;)

I don't know what you mean by that, we're British, not American. You don't really see people flying the Union Jack here, we aren't huge patriots, quite the opposite in my opinion.

If you did fly the Union Jack, you'd probably be arrested for racism. I dislike the police here. And the current government. And lots of things, actually. Not a great country, all in all. The people who voted must have been tourists, only see the shiny bits of Britain. No national pride any more. Not since the War anyway.

The soap box and the link hive have become very similar, maybe this thread needs moving, i'm not sure really.

Dezmond, the power of democracy is not that the people chose who's best fit, because most of the voters aren't educated enough to make a good decision (and that probably goes for you and me as well). The power of democracy is that you can choose someone else if the previous one messes up.

Also, ID cards are far from crazy legislation (i'm a supporter of mandatory ID), the anti-terrorism laws may be, but they didn't make it did they?

Voting for whom you hate least, well, that's just one view, i refuse to believe it's structurally worse in the UK compared to the rest of europe. :)

There's nothing wrong with desiring change though, surely there's a political party that thinks alike that you can join?

I quite enjoy the "bad" weather. Where I live, we don't get much rain. Although there are some really nice wind gusts and an occasional dust storm :)

Burberry you left that one out, understandable all things considered :)

As for the anti-terrorism laws, I.D. cards etc. if they will work so well why were they not introduced in Northern Ireland and Great Britain 20 odd years ago hummmmm…?

ermmm... probably not. You have to adapt to a parties thoughts, not the other way round. Silly system really, but better than the American one. Not being racist, it just is.

You forgot the fact that:
Most people couldn't spell 'good citizen' or 'community' anymore
A lot of taxpayers money goes on wasteful ideas like a recent health and safety thing; 'What types of slippers old people wear' WTF is that all about?
Another one; 'the dole' a lot of people on the dole are perfectly capable of working, just don't want to.

I think we should introduce selective conscription i.e. anyone who is on the dole but doesn't want to put anything into society is conscripted into a force of their choice but to avoid teaching thugs how to fire guns (great idea) we bring back batmen and servants etc. and make them do that!

Yes, I have evil plans for the future... :D

Well: on the point about people on the dole, I've got some experience of that (I did my work experience at the Job Centre, so you could say I have a pretty good insight) and you are correct in some ways. Yes, there will always be those who don't want to work, but some of these people have had hard lives and are limited to what they can do. Also, some job vacancies are a joke - I once saw a position of a decorator. The job duration? 2 days. So the paperwork involved in suspending some's JSA (Job-Seeker's Allowance) for 2 days' worth of work is ridiculous.

Conscription, however, is taking things too far. If anyone seriously suggested reintroducing conscription for the war in Iraq or whatever, I'd be the first to tell them to shove it up their ****. For a start I don't condone war in general, and I honestly don't think I could kill another person and happily live with myself. I'd rather go to jail than go to war.
Secondly, can we claim to be a civilised society, and yet force our people to pack up and go to war in what is essentially - and stop me if this is too strong a term - 'sanctioned terrorism'? Are we honestly any better than some misguided people who believe it is in the common interest to start WWIII?

I think the comparison is more about within Western Europe. It's redundant to say it's better than living in Uganda, everyone knows that already, it's obvious. We're British damn it, let us moan! :)

Anyway, as someone who has lived in the UK all his life, but visted other places in Europe, I don't know what you think is so good about this overpopulated island, Pestcontrol.

Oh, and about benefits. There should be no breeding on benefits, why can't people understand this. If you haven't had a job for 10 years, you shouldn't be having your 4th child dropping out of you. This isn't the 19th century. You have a child while on benefits, and you either have an abortion or it's taken off you. Simple.

Excluding city states and some small islands, the Netherlands are currently the fourth densest nation after Bangladesh, Taiwan and South Korea. I don't think we're overpopulated at all.
The very moaning is the reason i posted in this thread, it annoys me when people moan without perspective. :)

As for mandatory abortion, children and benefits. I think that's beyond the scope of this thread. ;)

Can you moan with perspective? I think you'd be making a salient point if you did. :)

Edit: well OK you can. Depends on your definition of moaning. You can have a valid point but moan about it ;)

Is that in terms of the number of the population per unit area, or their intelligence? ;)

I'd say the word moaning says something about the way you bring up a point.

Might be my english reaching it's limits here though, it's easy to get those subtle differences wrong. :)
