One thing I strongly recommend when you do replace the card. Download the latest drivers for the new card before installing it. Uninstall the old card. Then, instead of rebooting, turn off your PC, replace the card, load it up and install the new drivers. Very recently I've had 2 machines that have complained about drivers, one was an nVidia and one was an ATI. So yeah. It's more being safe than required.

Okay elD thank you :) Is it as simple as just download the new drivers, uninstall the current card (in add/remove programs?), turn the computer off, plug new card in, turn computer on, install downloaded drivers and go?

Yep. That is all you need to do.

Stick the new card in boot to safe mode and run a drive cleaner. Uninstalling gfx drivers letting windows try and do it is a very messy art form. Very hard to get it all, can also cause issue if you are changing manufacturer.
Somet like driver sweeper or the like will do a much better job of removing all the driver crap and all the little registry bits that the uninstall can occasionally miss.
