Wargames!

Wargames just had a new (free like they should be) DLC expansion pack and a bit of balancing.

Steam are also giving it to us at 50% off this weekend at the princely sum of £14.99.

I suggest anyone who loves an RTS without resource harvesting and amazing battles with rich tactics gives it a look.

Ronin Panda Spicypixel and I all have it and it is awesome.

To be honest, I really don't think you can get a better game for £15. This game is a rarity that is actually worth the full price, so at half, rock on.

Yep, heartily approve of Wargame. If we can't get a good game of Nuclear Dawn going this evening, I suggest we do this instead.

Also, looks like infantry AT and AA has got a much needed boost.

I don't know if armoured anti air really needed it (looking at the patch notes trax showed me last night suggested it had a boost), but any boost to infantry is welcome.

helicopters (quite rightly) seem to be the red headed stepchild of the game anyway. Just a great way to throw away points against competent players.

I think the armour AA stuff was all about range so that they aren't raped by waves of high-level helos.

Do the high level helos still out range them?

I haven't played for a while, but felt that setting up your anti air in a layered manner (with both vehicles and infantry) was crucial to avoiding the situation you describe.

Ohhhh, that would then be like a modern 3d Sudden Strike?
Yeah, I have NO IDEA what that is. Perhaps one of the others could elaborate?

Other differences from WiC include the requisition mechanics, and mechanism in which the units appear on the field.

The game is much more slowly paced than WiC, decisions and movements need to be made more carefully.

I think that a good part of that is map size. Larger maps make for more maneuvering space, which keeps the action apart.

But, as you say, if your AA in one place and the enemy helos are in another then you're a bit screwed... (though Marder autocannons do a fairly decent job at a pinch).

The WiC comparison is a reasonable one. Don't know Sudden Strike either unfortunately.

To say that WEE is slow paced, though, doesn't feel fair. There's always stuff to be doing, things to be watching, units to be pushing or retreating, recon to be done... it's just that the explody action part comes in different flavours and intensities, from a brief force recon engagement to an all out armour battle with close air support.

But you'd agree it's slower paced than WiC, which is what I said?

Anything like close combat or combat mission? Im guessing its like real war, rather than say CoH, Like Arma is to battlefield?

The shaders alone make it look awesome, though it will put my 5850 in pain.

No, not really like either Close Combat or Combat Mission. World in Conflict is about as close as we've come in comparison, I think. Combat Mission's turn base just doesn't fit at all and Close Combat's scale is too small.

It's also not ultra realistic or anything like ArmA aspires to. But there's more to it than Company of Heroes.

I guess that it's in some neat middle ground where it gives a good nod to real world stuffs while happily being a large scale RTS that wants good game play. The scale makes it, I think.

For an unknown reason it is downloading rather slowly. I'll hopefully try to grips with it a little later and then see if I can grab some of you for a game.
