What game has the best soundtrack?

For me, it has to be Half Life 2. It just sets the mood when you're running about with an RPG trying to take down the gunships, I swear I'd fail at Half Life if it wasn't for the music making me all courageous and stuff! :p

So, what made a game great for you because of the soundtrack?

Final Fantasy IX, no question about it. Nobuo Uematsu is a living legend, I've yet to find any game that puts as much effort into sound as Squaresoft/Squeenix's Final Fantasy series. In short, the FFIX soundtrack is a masterpiece. I get the feeling it's all down to personal taste, especially since it mostly consists of swooping orchestral themes, but for me it just did the magic. Apart from being the best VG music production I've ever heard, it fit the game perfectly; I'd say the game wouldn't have been half as good (bearing in mind this is my favourite videogame ever) without Nobuo's effort.

A while ago, I managed to find the entire soundtrack (along with the soundtrack for every other Square game created) here at BlueLaguna.net. I'd recommend you sample '1-The Place I'll Return To Someday', '7-Vamo' alla Flamenco', both the regular and Boss battle themes, '26 - Ice Cavern', the Chocobo Themes (Ukelele de... etc.), Qus/Quina's themes, Kujas themes, Mystery Sword, Loss Of Me (such an incredibly moving part of the game), Freya/Burmecia's themes, Hunter's Chance, Terra/Bran Bal, Iifa Tree (creepy!), Place of Memory, Dark Messenger, and my personal favourite ... '93-You're Not Alone!' (best part of the game!).

Ok, I know none of you are going to try any more than one or two tracks, it probably wouldn't do them justice either.
Believe me when I say - if you want to experience these to their fullest, please play the game! You will not be disappointed.

Other games with honourable merit include every single other FF game, Medal of Honor Frontline, the Mario games (no, not just for the generic 'Mario Theme'. Try Mario Bros. 3 on the NES :)), Tomb Raider 2 and 4 (1 and 3 werent so good) and finally Mega Man 1 on the NES (Electro Man's stage - catchy as hell).

Note: The soundtrack is on sale to the public, and as such is covered by a myriad of copyright, trademark, disribution and legislative laws and all that legal rubbish. I'm sure there is some kind of disclaimer somewhere on BlueLaguna.net. All I'm saying is, it's illegal in one way or the other so when I say sample, I do mean sample.

To be honest, I prefer to not have music while playing a game, usually the sounds of me slaughtering the opponent is music enough to my ears :).

Opening scene for Battlefield 1942! Such good music they used diff variations in Bf2 and 2142 but the orignal is the best! It just sets the modd for the whole game!

hmmm ... probably the funniest soundtrack is from Beyond Good & Evil ... this fanatic anti-american propaganda music ^^ i just laughed my ass off to that one ...but the best one ... hmmm ... i kinda like the Halo 1 & 2 sounds ... but normally i think every game which has a soundtrack fitting to its content has a good soundtrack (or could you really imagine listening to hardrock/ hardcore UT-style music while playing ... The Sims or something ;) )

Halo and Halo 2 had fantastic soundtracks by Martin O'Donnell.
The music definitely set the atmosphere of the game. From the awe-inspiring scenes of the humongous covenant ships and alien atmospheres, to the intense battles, there would be music to fit every occasion.

Agreed - The music was one of the main reasons I loved the games so much.

  • All Introversion games - No, not just because I'm a fan boy!
    • Uplink's music is fast paced enough that when you are hacking into a bank, and the trace tracker is ticking the few seconds you have away, you really are on the edge of your seat. And it's 2D, menu and text graphics. Amazing!
    • Darwinia's retro electronica soundtrack is also great. It fits the game brilliantly, and takes you back to when games were simpler, and not copies of each other! Also, it's just plain old great!
    • Defcon's low rumblings and distant music make the game even more atmospheric then Uplink, and again, it's a 2D map. The music pulls you away from reality just that little bit more to make you actually care about saving the lives of those extra million people in a city in South America that you have never heard of!
  • Homeworld 1 - Great music. Okay, Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings (as used in Platoon) is placed absolutely perfectly into the game (not going to spoiler it for those who haven't played, but if you have that sense just makes me hurt on the inside :(). The rest of the game music is, of course, fantastic as well.
  • Halo series - As stated, is also completed with a great soundtrack. When hordes of enemies are coming towards you, the timings of the grenades, and whacks of your weapons hitting their faces can't help but be in time with the beats!

tbh uplinks music gets so repetitive it's annoying after a while...

And I like the music in Hitman 2 :)

I'm gonna have to say Halo 2 but it's just instrumental music.

Bah you know nothing rookies  one of the best ones was in Deus ex .
Also in Guild Wars by Jeremy Soule and you haven't heard of Frank the pro Klepacki :) who made the music for C&C games - top of his class i'd say.
Warrior Within's music was grand
