Why was I banned?

Right - so I dont do xbox shizzle at all.
1) Why are people giving themselves purple skin and blue hair and whatnot?
2) How are they doing this? Surely if the colours are all handled by the avatar editor, then i can't see how theyre getting other colours into their gamertag. Or is it cos the system just generates a png or something clientside and uploads that, rather than locking it down?
3) Why is modifying one little image like that enough to cause a permaban on an account. A temporary ban of a month and a warning or something like that, maybe, but I wouldn't have thought modifying a little image would warrant a permaban.
4) Why cant you upload your own images anyway - like on..... say.... steam?

Oh right. I was seeing some which were showing like plain images rather than renders of the little dudes, so thought it was just an image thing rather than the whole avatar.
