XCOM: Enemy Unknown

Aye, not talking about the missions themselves, more to do with the base-building and research etc. but I think it's almost totally free now for me to do whatever I want.

I'm still on four in my team, but I can build an officer school to increase the team to 5, not sure how many times I can do that, but I had heard rumours that it's capped at a number lower than what fans of the original would like. . . .

Will hopefully have time to play it some more soon, and will report on how it is on normal difficulty, though I have heard that that is still vicious.

Having not played the original, and enjoying turn based games (e.g. blood bowl) what is the likelihood I'll enjoy this?

It won't be a near future purchase, as the only games on my must buy list at the moment are Dishonoured (bought and preloaded), Bioshock Infinite and whatever they do next with Wargame. I have too much other stuff to do to buy lots. Maybe a steam sale stash.

It's not a boardgame, so the Blood Bowl comparison isn't a great one as the maths is going to be well hidden in the engine. However, I reckon you might have enjoyed the original and if you're not coming at this with those preconceptions (like I am) then there's a moderate chance you'd enjoy this.

I sense that a bunch of us are waiting for a Steam sale on this...

Maybe not as much as you'd think. When taking a shot you can bring up an info dialog full of NUMBERS that tells you why the hit % is what it is.

And yeah, squads are limited to six. Makes bringing rookies along on important missions to level a somewhat more risky proposition.

There is a lot of chatter going on at the bloodbowl forums about this game and it is resoundingly positive. One thing that i did pick up is that there is a huge difference between playing on normal and playing on classic difficulties. Certainly it sounds like you are better off playing on normal unless you are willing to restart countless times.

I'm in the camp of waiting for a steam sale to get this one. It seems good and i want to play it, but not for $60.

Few mods have been released to change game play and shake things up a bit.

Warspace Extension - Tweaks the games features to "give more control to the player". Weapons have been rebalanced, enemy AI has been tweaked... hell everything has been retweaked.

Second Wave - Offers a couple of Unreal Tournament style mutilators such as weapons do random damage, 100% critical on flanks, randomised funding from council members and several others.

Haven't tried any, but I may on my next play through.

Think I saw a totalbiscuit tweet saying that warspace Extension is slightly buggy at mo:

Found it.

Yeahh... I would not recommend Warframe Extension for XCOM, the zombie change in terror missions is unfathomably stupid.

Just a heads up.

There seems to be a downloadable add-on to the game called Sling-shot. From the review i read it is overpriced for what you get, which is saying a lot considering they are charging $6 for it!

I was tempted to buy Xcom when they had the autumn sale (33% off), but reckon i will hold out until the Xmas sale when i guess it will be selling for 50% off.

Addon features new hats (yep), 3 new council missions and a new playable character who from what I understand is a bit shit.
