"Band of Brothers" by Stephen E. Ambrose is the best war story I have ever read, and that it is true only adds to its appeal.
Orwell's "1984" is superb and "Animal Farm" is the only book that I read back in my school days and actually enjoyed. My all-time favourite work of fiction though is William Golding's "Lord of the Flies" — a total masterpiece well deserving of the nobel prize that it did a great deal to win for him. Jeffrey Archer's "Kane and Abel" is a nice story which develops its characters well and has a strong ending.
Homer's "The Iliad" (basis for most of the movie Troy) is a good read. It's far superior to the film, which excluded the interactions between the gods and mortals — probably the most important part of the book. Plato's "Republic" is also interesting if philosophy is your thing.
William Craig's "Enemy at the Gates" is the best history book I've ever read. Don't be fooled — its connection to the film is tenuous at best and the account given by the author of the battle of Stalingrad is excellent.
Finally, if science is more your thing then Bill Bryson's "A Short History of Nearly everything" is a fantastic book which manages to cover in about, 600 pages, pretty much every major scientific development ever.
