CoD4 server

I remembered that some of you guys were wanting a CoD4 server so I've been keeping an eye out for the Linux binaries.

The 1.3 binaries have been released, but they are only a patch. I checked further back and discovered that the 1.0 binaries are only a patch as well. Get this...

In order to do an install on Linux you need to do the following:

CoD4 installation said:
Copy the contents of disc one's "Setup/Data" directory to wherever you want to install the Call of Duty 4(tm) Linux server. There should be a "localization.txt" file in the root of this directory, and a "main" Subdirectory. Each additional disc should be opened and the contents of each "Data" folder should be copied over to the existing Main folder. When you have copied everything, the final installation size is around 3.5 gigabytes.

See that bit about 3.5GB? That's what one of you who own the game would need to upload to Promethius. At maximum upload speed on DSL MAX (~400kbit/sec) that's over 20 hours of uploading.

As I don't own the game, I can't do this. Does anyone else have a better idea or care to volunteer?

I can leave something going overnight - does it have instructions for uploading the relevant stuff from the steam version of the game?

I have the game (though not installed) and 20Meg cable at home. However, I'm now not going to be home until Sunday. If you guys want to wait until then, I'm happy to leave it going (starting at midday sunday), but if it will be quicker for someone else to do, I don't mind :)

Cable, traditionally, has a smaller upload bandwidth than ADSL. What's your upload on that beast like?

elD, you're easily the fastest for this job and already have FTP access. Should take you ~11hours.

errr I have a 1.1M up pipe.
do I win somet.

Oh yeah, Be internet > * for upload. And bob can start it going now :)

Actually, get Vibs to do it from ECS. With their speeds, he can upload the whole 6.5Gig in, like, 27nanoseconds! Well, maybe 28...

That's a point if we get it off ECS then we have a 17M up pipe. Or something crazy like that anyway.even worth getting it off Vib's line at home as he is much closer to the exchange than me. saying that that'd be like 1.3 up instead of 1ish.

Bob, Vibs dosn't have the game though, You'd need to do a little visit :p

Failing that I could make smaller .rar's and upload them in smaller goes rather than one big blob ? sure it may take slightly longer but this also cuts down on any segmented files ....

I've only got about 350-400 kbps up though

i'm on a 1.7mb upload here, so ya boo sucks to all, uploading from ecs aint feasible, there just isn't a computer free to leave it running on atm
However, i doesn't have cod4!

In relation to the server. I don't know about the other COD people but I very much have my favourite 3 servers that I'd play all public stuff on. I'm personally happy to wait for a proper linux server binary for the time being. As this seems to be a bit of an arsey way to do it.

Tets, I'll post up some poll in the games chat later to see what sort of server we should run for when we've got it all sorted :) so normal hardcore old school and then the game types too :)

ok after reading this thread it seems there are more suitable people out there. But I'm still happy to leave something overnight if needed.
