[i40] Games

Thinking back to i37, there was a bit through Friday where it felt very much like no one knew what to play and we weren't sure who had what game or who'd be up for what. I think we eventually settled for some CoD4 and Section 8 but I remember that taking hours (i.e. longer than the 30 seconds it should have taken ;) ).

So, for newcomers and old guard alike, I propose we collect a list of games that we anticipate we'll be playing. It's not a list where everyone is expected to have everything on there or participate in all games or anything; it's just a helpful list so that people can see what we're likely to be playing and so we can leap right in and get some games of stuff from get-go. Sound good?

Post your thoughts in reply. I'll collate and update this post to reflect the current thinking. In particular, it'd be super-useful if people would say which of the games below they are or aren't interested in so we can see where the big hitters are.

To get us started:

(Items in italics are tentatively on the list pending people saying they're interested or not. Later on, italicised items will be removed or archived in a "nearly great" list if they've not got much support so this list will be a "core" list.)

Shooters

  • Battlefield: Bad Company 2
  • Call of Duty 4
  • Left for Dead 2
  • ArmA 2 (with ACE2 mod)
  • Team Fortress 2
  • Battlefield 2142

Real Time Strategy

  • Dawn of War 2 (expansion optional)
  • World in Conflict
  • Total Annihilation
  • Supreme Commander

Turn-Based / Longer Strategy

  • Civilization 4 (with Beyond the Sword expansion)
  • Napoleon: Total War

MMOs

  • World of Warcraft
  • EVE Online

Other Multiplayer Games

  • Trackmania
  • Freelancer

Updates:
2010-04-14: Further updates from Bob, Gombol, Iron Fist
2010-04-14: Updated with thatbloke's suggestions.

You missed TF2 - that was a blast last time (we should make sure Prom's TF2 servers are updated).

If we're gonna play Civ4 I personally would prefer that we use the Beyond the Sword expansion too.

I personally am not that interested in L4d2 or ArmA or RTS games, and will likely be playing EVE/WoW too.

Only got: BC2, L4D2, MW2, DoW2 (No expansion). Might get Civilization, always liked the look of it but *shrug*.

What about throwing Napoleon Total War into the mix? If we can get a couple of people playing a game, might be fun.

Not saying your wrong, but wouldnt it be fairer to not have RPG's going? Since i personally dont play EVE anymore, and i dont play WoW on SSL anymore (And dont plan to unless its population shoots up), Plus RPG's are useally played online anyway, so kinda defeats the nature of a LAN, no? Not sure if anyone agrees with me, just my 2 cents.

Yea the whole "YOU MUST PLAY LAN GAMES AT LAN" argument always comes up, and I always give anyone who says that the finger.

While perhaps a valid opinion just 5 years ago, in today's climate where most games require you to be online even for LAN play and are in fact removing LAN play altogether, that ain't gonna happen. At all. Otherwise you limit the games you can actually play at the event significantly, and it's not just about the LAN play now, it's about the gathering of people. There's more to a LAN than LAN play nowadays, with various activities other than gaming going on.

Additionally, I'd like to add Trackmania to the list of games :)

It's not a case of figuring out the only things we're going to play. It's pretty much inevitable at an i-series that a bunch of time will be spent on MMOs by people who play MMOs. While I'm recording them, I don't figure that those of us who don't really play MMOs will be picking them up just to play at i40.

It's in the other team-based, shorter investment games that I'm more interested. Stuff where someone could realistically pick up a game or two the week before and be ready to play alongside other THNers. People are going to have solo play time, MMO play time, wandering around just peering at other people's screens, or at the vendor stalls. But when we want a game, it'd be better for us to just be able to whip out a few favourites and perhaps even organise a couple of longer/larger games in advance (e.g. Civ4).

definitely up for some COD4 or TF2, maybe some Sup Com, TA or old school C&C and should hopefully have my Freelancer server back up and running by then :)

Fair enough.

Also remember we are getting a group of 20 odd ppl which means plenty of ppl to play with.

If we are all playing an FPS that is an entire server :p.

I'll certainly be playing eve at some point during i40

I've got everything but ARMA, also BF2142 is a much better battlefield game :p. Well it allows me to play it for a start

Out of interest, do they do a mirror of the main steam install files / gcfs and stuff on site? E.g. if I got there and wanted to buy / download a game, would they have the files there, or would I have to download it from the interwebs?

The have a local steam content server but because of the way that steam works in contacting whatever content server you have it setup to look at, it may not always end up using the local server.

Additionally MPUK have no control over what is actually on the local server in the first place - so even if steam does kick in and correctly use the local instead of a remote server, depending on what game you buy it may not be on the local server.

I would suggest that were you to want to purchase a steam game for the event you do it beforehand, and install it on your home connection as opposed to at the event as the speed you will get for downloading files will be a few kilobytes/second at best

That's good, there are enough games for me to play on that list already without adding even more. One I will be playing that isn't there is GUILD WARS, but I won't ask you to add that as that's mostly just a 'me' (and Iron Fist) thing.
