Following on a discussion in the glorious IRC channel, we have been discussing possible transport implications of i43 moving to telford.

Telford is not confirmed yet. This is mere pondering on the idea.

From the map it seems that theres a nice bundle of people in the southeast (e.g. from southampton around to the line between telford and ipswitch)

There are currently 11 people showing up on the map (me, bob, 3dge, bloke, trax, bacon, carps, spicy, huung, vel, ........

I LIE

10 people showing up on the map cos some people are in twice :p

Now I know there are a few other people who *could* end up in that section, e.g. Pingue, who fails hard, silkth/solemn, who are around bucks afaik, vibs/alex/notfred etc who are in the stevenagey area.

However, some of these people already have car transport, so might not really apply to them as much.

Whichever way : I'm babbling. Those of us who dont have easy access to car transport to get up to telford, are possibly looking at getting some form of minibus up there.

Now there are a few options

1) Hire a minibus - there are various hoops and jumps you have to get through to do this regarding age of driver and suchlike. Cost of the hire and petrol can be reimbursed and split between us, but we can't actually pay the driver, which I'm fine with :p. Then we'd book the minibus from thurs>mon (+ any other days we might need)

2) Hire a minibus + driver - meet up somewhere vaguely central to us southern lot (e.g. somewhere around oxford based on that google map), and then get up to telford from there.

Of course there are various issues with both. e.g. if we went for 2) people then still need to get to oxford with their gear somehow, but with 1) it could be a bit more flexible, e.g. go via a couple of stops on the way. 1) might be more expensive if we needed to book the minibus for 5 days rather than just the days we need it for.

So a heads up of who would want / can give transport then?

Thoughts / ideas / comments?

OK, So I don't actually currently have a car but I am planning to by LAN so (depending on the size of the car) I should be able to bring someone along.

Interesting idea Wol, can i ask, how much further north of oxford would you be willing to go before turning west, I presume no further than Leicester.

I ask this because i can more likely than not get transport to the M1 between Leicester and Milton Keynes.

I'd be thinking that it would be M40 > M5. or M1 / M6 i imagine.

Although it would be

1) we make it to oxfordish (somehow?), and do one trip direct from oxford.
2) we do a round trip driving ourself, which might work out best doing soton > guildford > north of m25 > stevenage > milton keynes, and then round that way, in which case you might be pickuppable from somewhere around leicster. Would still need someone who would drive it though.

all depends on timings and who in the end needs it.

We could get 2 x 7 seaters rather than 1 x 15 seater (assuming we can arrange self-drive rather than hired driver).

Whats the relative price of 2x7 compared to 1x15?

atm. theres the southampton bundle (me, bob, pingue, blokeish), theres you kinda inbetween , near 3dge (with his sillycar), so I imagine we could get a 7 seater out of that sort of area.

And then between trax / vibs / carps / huung/vel/spicy and that lot, there could probably be a 7 seater + a car or so.

I've selected have a car, however may possibly (depending on varying factors) look into joining the lanbus

That's what I was looking for :P

Its the "finding a big minibus for lots of people is harder than a smaller one + some cars"

3dge: I'm sort of ignoring the fact that you have a car based on the fact that you can only *just* fit your kit in it! :p

What do people think of bundling kit into a car e.g. towers / monitors and some bags, someone can drive that up, and then getting a group ticket on the train instead?

In my experience, longer driving journeys (> 2 hours) go better with a copilot. That said, the passenger seat of a car is a very bad place to put computer kit so that wouldn't be a big problem, I imagine.

Yeah, I was thinking more having all the back seats down filled with LAN goodies to create one big space and then 2 peoples.

As you rightly say, passenger seats are a faff to put stuff in!

We'd also have to trust that the driver aint gunna drive off with everything. Can always get the reg no though. :p

Actually, that'd be another reason to have a copilot, and not particularly for reasons of protecting THNers from THNers. Driver needs to take a toilet break? Someone can stay with the kit so the car isn't stolen with everyone's computer inside.
