Mirror's Edge

Well EA are presently developing a game called Mirror's Edge in which you play a character called Faith running about delivering messages as it's the only way to privately convey messages in a totalitarian and dystopian society.

Right well that sounds as boring as hell. Check the trailer.

It seems EA have been inspired by Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed wherein you could run anywhere and climb over everything and it looks bloody amazing. In this era of 7th Generation games everything is grey, brown or a mixture between the two. You'll notice that Mirror's Edge isn't. In fact, it's very white. Discussion about game developers apparently being limited to one colour should be saved for another time but my point is Mirror's Edge looks a hell of a lot better than those shown. Mirror's Edge is bright and clean whereas the others look like someone has vomited and added some fancy lighting affects.

According to Wikipedia it's a First Person Hand-to-hand combat game. In other words run from building to building, jump and rip someone's eyes out with your toenails. Yes please!

Of course, it is EA so expect a couple of bugs like not being able to jump.

This game is in my "I want list". Expect it late 2008.

I saw the trailer for this a while ago, linked from somewhere, (possibly CAD).

It's also on my list :D

The trailer for that is striking, bright and beautiful. I have no idea whether the game will be good but I'll happily watch that trailer a few times over. :)

I am concerned that either running along walls/over pipes/etc. will be automagic in that you just run near them, and if there is a big drop below you, it will just stick you to them, or it will have horrid key combinations in order to do everything in the world, like running along a wall, stopping you from falling off pipes, etc., which could be really annoyingly shit.

And I'm still not sure about it as a whole. I have a horrid feeling it will be one of these games that start out as a hand to hand game, and as you go through, it will turn into a shooter. And you won't be on roof tops and stuff a lot. I'm not sure. Alarms are ringing in my head a lot.

Pretty pessimistic view there, elDibbles. Look at Assassin's Creed. If you wanted to run up a wall you held on of the shoulder buttons to run up it, and if it wasn't held you didn't. I'm pretty sure you'll only need WASD, Shift and Space.

There probably will be guns but that doesn't stop you from using your toe nails instead.

As I understand it, the guns work more as powerups than items; you toss weapons as soon as they're out of ammo.

Eurogamer have done a preview on Mirror's Edge that reads well but is clear in pointing out that they've not actually been allowed to put their hands on the game, yet.

The article refers to a story trailer, which is done in a comic somewhat anime style; the excellent musical score is present here again.

E3 gameplay trailer

I want to like this game. I really do. The more I see of it, though, the more it just doesn't sit well with me. Not sure what it is...

Again, at least the soundtrack is good. :)

In Mirror's Edge, you're actually moving your body.

Y'know, I have no idea whether the game is going to be worthwhile but if they can make the toy aspect of the title (in the movement around the city) up to par then I'll buy it anyway.

The game does look really cool, though I do share people doubts about the implementation of the movement systems. Hopefully though with these kind of things having been done a bit before (Prince of Persia and Assasins Creed) they have something of a benchmark to improve upon. Only other slight concern is the first person view, not really sure how that will work out with the emphasis being on moement and interaction with the environment, or hand to hand comabt for that matter.
