Omg --> Spore!

So far I wouldn't give it that high a score, myself... but then again I never liked the Sims either...

Hmm, correlation with liking The Sims may be important here. I do like The Sims, though I tend to play it in bursts with long gaps in between. Have to see, here.

Of course, no release would be complete without some sort of technical snafu.

Eurogamer said:
Gamers who got hold of the game early-doors have been unable to login for want of some sort of validation code.

"We are aware that many of you are having login problems with Spore. This is being investigated so please bear with us!" a spokesperson wrote on the official forum.

Our LAN mate converse has been playing all night and approves.

Apparently it is a really pleasant change of pace.

It's a whole lot of fun with prizes to be won.

Just played for 3 hours straight and I gotta say it really is very enjoyable. Started off trying to befriend everyone however others aren't so generous towards you so it's big snarly fang time. However you ally with some uber massive chap after a crazy charm offensive and you are good to go.

This really is awesome.

Sod penis monsters.

Here's an attempt to better explain how I feel about the game.

It's different and a lot of fun and has somet for everyone. It's colourful and cheery but you can also rip giant flying bad things into pieces. I don't want to tell ppl what happens as it takes away the fun but it really does work quite well. I had a slight clunky moment where due to the game progression the camera completely changes however it took me no real time to adjust and this is saying something as that is normally one of my biggest issues with strategy style games.

It's been a long time since any game has grabbed me like this where I've been enjoying every element of it. One thing I would say is play it on hard. I'm on medium and regretting it, its a bit too easy. However it is so much fun.

I'll say no more as I don't want to give anything away.

It's colourful and fun, the gameplay is simple but thoroughly enjoyable thus far. I'm not a fan of spending hours making my houses look pretty but some of the options are awesome. I also lack the artistic flair. You design all the vehicles as well which really does make it insanely good fun.

This game is special.

I can't quite explain it. The different sections are... Lackluster. They're enjoyable enough, but they're pretty shallow gameplay-wise. Yet it's enthralling. I spent most of the day playing because I couldn't tear myself away. There's something about the persistence of everything and the incredible customization that just makes it brilliant.

You'll need to play it to understand, I'd guess. It's worth it.

I really like the first 2 stages of the game, but if anything they're too short, and stage 3 feels so rushed, i am hoping someone mods the first 2 stages to make them last longer, and increase the DNA cap in stage one above 105.

I'll tell ya what, making creatures in stages 1 and 2 with no eyes, is very amusing(well in stage one, 2 is stressfull, running around on land searching for information on how to evolve ears/antenea).

So what about the "special" activation sequence which you can (according to rumours) only perform 3 times?

I don't have the game but having read up on it a little it's not three installs on the same PC, the 3 installs are three installs on different computers. so if you are someone that ends up re-formatting your computer often then you're pretty much screwed.

Turns out that Amazon product raters have a big thing against Spore's DRM (link to: The Register).

Amazon.com gives Spore one star. Amazon.co.uk currently racks up merely two and a half stars. Even if people have other gripes about the game, they pretty much always mention DRM somewhere. (links to: Amazon)

That said, it looks to me like people were expecting something other than a toy like The Sims, but toys are what Will Wright does best.

I'm willing to bet that the vast majority of folks who rated it on amazon didn't even play it. They'll purge those reviews once it's died down.

Aey, :)

Zomg. Just saw this thing on a mate's machine. Now, I need to know two things:

A) How can I buy it?

B) How can I not?

Cheers,
J.

Well According to slashdot the Spore DRM has now been loosened somewhat.

You can now have a maximum of 5 installs. (by the way, the whole "installs" thing is not 3 strikes and you're out - it's three different computers and you're out).

EA is speeding up development on a system that will easily allow you to transfer your authorised install from one computer to another, de-authorising your first computer in the process.

You will also be able to have multiple screen names per account, something that alot of families will find useful.

Ah, peachy! Rojaws said she'll buy this for me when I've got my next contract/job sorted out so maybe by the time I've got work they'll have sorted the patch? :)

I really have to say, I am so underwhelmed with Spore, it just not funny. The first 4 stages feel like an overly complex character selection screen to me (though Chris Delay says that the first 2 stages were brilliant...), and the final space stage has me in tears at a lot of the decisions. I don't want to spoil it for anyone, and I hope others are enjoying it more than me, but I really did think this game was going to be a hell of a lot better than it is, and I would probably sell it if I could get all the money back.

Still, oh well...
