Photoshop Tutorial

So I'm pretty bored, I've not found a decent game to play in ages, and so Photoshop's been what I've been doing mostly these days on the computer. I've not done a tutorial in ages, so I thought I would go ahead an make another one. I just wondered if anyone here on THN would like to request a certain aspect that they want me to focus on, Instead of making another Sig one or something else.

So has anyone any requests on a technique or techniques they might like to learn or brush up on in Photoshop? Tell me what and I'll see if I can do it, whether it's... Masking, Cutting out Images, Making Sigs, Special effects, or any of my sigs or big pieces I've done before.

Gimme something to do :p.

Edit: Upload Finished. End Result:

Yeah, abstract backgrounds it is :D So, do you show us how to make them and then we put our 'classwork' up and you assess them? :p

Actually, I do have a request...

I want to make a pretty large number of small images of various different kinds and sizes of planets: gas giants, habitable planets, water worlds, etc, etc, etc. Also, asteroid fields, suns, so on and so forth.

But I don't really know where to start. Hell, I'm not even sure I want to do them myself but I'd still like to do them for a tabletop RPG design I'm working on. I've snaffled all the planet images from Space Empires IV but obviously I can't use those anywhere apart from private stuff... and, besides, their sizes aren't very different and there isn't a good range of habitable looking ones.

How's that for one for some thoughts or advice?

Hey, that's an idea. I'm not sure if Macca is capable of creating planets from scratch (I dont reckon itd be too hard, with the advent of circle tools, layer merging, smudging and abstract brushes), but if he is then he could give us a couple tips and pointers on how to make our own. Then, if we all manage to make a few each we could conglomerate them all and you could use them in your project? Or am I stepping too far forward here? It'd be nice to have some kind of tangible, and beneficial, output methinks.

Me also thinks Macca doesn't know what he let himself in for :p

Hehe... Nope all sounds good to me :D.

Sure thing on the B.G.'s Tetsuo, and yeah I'll make some Planets and include them in the tut :D.

Ronin, I was thinking some more about your planets and I decided to have a go creating one in Bryce.

Earth2

It's an Earth clone, and it's pretty rough because it's my first and I was in a hurry. What do you think? There's an almost infinite level of scope available in Bryce, so I could create any kind of planet you want. I'll try a gaseous giant later on, if you like.

Also, for any of you that have Bryce, creating even a half-decent planet is incredibly simple. I could do a tutorial for planets, if you want :)

Yes tets! if you could do that i'l try and make some planets too ;)

obviously its quite easily a sphere, with a couple of textures over it, but as im not that experienced i'd love a tip or two :p

That looks very good. There's scope here for two different streams; first, where I ask for a particular kind of thing and the second where I throw on anything that looks interesting, or just useful.

For example...

I might ask for 20 blue-green habitable planets, with say 8 small (50x50px), 8 medium (80x80px) and 4 large (120x120px). Roughly half more green than blue, and the other half more blue than green. Low cloud cover so it's possible to see the planet colouration.

I've made that up on the spot but that's where I'm thinking in vague terms. I'll grab a screenie of some stuff I've mocked up using SE4's planets to show you my intended use.

Now, open declaration, I am wondering about building up the thing I'm designing into a professional package, either as a toolkit or as a game product. That means real money, somewhere along the way. But there's no money in it now. I mention this because, at some point, I might start talking about this in product terms and I don't want anyone to contribute something and then feel I'm stealing their work. If it comes to being a real product and people have made contributions then I'd talk to you about license-to-use or outright purchasing the products then. For now, this is just play. Later, it might have a real edge to it. :)

(Sorry Macca, I seem to have hijacked your thread...! Still keen for other ideas and ways to produce these as I don't have Bryce, but I do have Photoshop.)

Here's another I made:

BrotherAndSister

It was supposed to be a gas giant, but it looks more like Mercury + clouds. Anyway, yeah, I could try and customise it for you, but mostly it's just me putting down some random cloud/geographic textures and then messing about with the scales to make it look unique. I'll try anything.

Here's one I made quickly just there, I've been busy tonight but I should be able to do the tutorial tommorow night or something.

main.php

I'll add in how to make habital looking ones aswell in the tutorial. There pretty simple to make once you get the hang of it. It's better to start bigger, as then you can resize smaller without taking much detail away, whereas if you start small and make it big it just gets messy.

> R.S. Don't worry about anything to do with the proffesional side if you do go ahead an do that. I just like doing them for fun, I won't sue you :p.

Anyway should be able to do it tommorow.

Well theres the Tut. I have included how to make the planet above ^^, and also how to make another signature with a slightly fancier background to the one Tetsuo was looking for:

armyman2si5.png

I've also not included how to make a habital looking one, because I originally planed to show you how to make a habital looking planet out of the planet you just made, but I missed out a vital step when doing it so I just cut that part. I'll make a seperate one showing how to do the habital planet.

Enjoy, feedback welcomed.
