Social Research Project

Hello everyone,

I've just spoken with Haven and Ronin and received their blessing to use the THN forum in my research for my final year project at University.

I will be observing threads so that I can gather data on how posting styles differ between different online communities.

I'm hoping to conduct interviews with members of this forum as well. If any of you are interested, please get in touch.

As a Sociology student I am bound by rather strict ethical standards, this means that all data gathered will be anonymous, the community will not be named, and usernames will be changed to protect your privacy. If any of you do not wish me to use your posts in my project you can let me know and I will make sure not to use anything you post in my work.

When my project is in its final draft I will send a copy of whichever sections include references to (an anonymised) THN so that he can ensure that I am not misrepresenting the community in any way, and anyone that I interview will be given the same courtesy.

If any of you have questions about this, please feel free to contact me, and I will get back to you ASAP. :)

Cheers,
Xarlaxas

Hey, :)

You are hereby authorized to use anything public from me in any way, shape or form, up to and including all those things you said you wouldn't use, such as my real name and whatnot.

I won't post it here, since it's against forum policy, but you're welcome to PM me for any details you think might be helpful.

Cheers,
J.

Zomg, OP is troll, lololol, tits or gtfo etc etc.

I was so going to post something like that. ;)

Ya, just to confirm publicly:

I trust Xar to use good judgement and make a good thing of his research. Aside from that, I honestly don't think we would have noticed if he'd just lurked and done his research without our knowledge and/or permission so I think it must implicitly be fine. Perhaps someone is doing that already...

What's the hypothesis you're trying to test?

What other online communities are you investigating?

Do you think that thn will act as somewhat of an outlier, considering the proliferation of teamspeak, and the fact that many of us know each other in real life, and the fact that the community (as far as online goes) is fairly tight knit?

Well, the main thrust of my research is that one's "internet identity" isn't just a single facet of one's identity, but that a person has a variety of internet identities that they perform on the different communities that they visit. I'm hoping to prove (or disprove it) through observing different communities and interviewing people, I'm especially interested in people who post on more than one forum!

Sadly THN is the first place where I've gotten permission (though I've only started sending out message a couple days ago). If I get positive responses from them I will have five communities to observe altogether, which should be pretty good. Though only one or two are really necessary as I hope to get the real meat of my research from interviews.

Those are all very interesting aspects of THN, and I've found that they're becoming more common with fora these days, of the ones I'm hoping to observe 3 have their own real-time chat systems (of a sort), with many people becoming facebook friends with posters they are close to, and two of the fora having had official meet-ups. I'd say that THN is probably more tightly knit than other ones because it is much more. . . intimate than the others, especially as THN is a clan, which, I think, generates a bit more of an esprit de corps than most communities, but the others I have my eyes on are pretty tightly knit too, well, most of them are at any rate.

If anyone else wants to ask me difficult questions go ahead, it helps me organise my thoughts! :)

My availability is pretty poor this next week but happy to be interviewed as long as you're ok with a slow response during that time period.
