Star Trek Online

Eurogamer are running a hands-on preview for Star Trek Online. Made clear is that this is no EVE Online, but they're very positive in their commentary. Apparently, a beta is available "really soon".

Eurogamer said:
Cryptic's aim is to give fans that dream: to be a starship captain. Every player in Star Trek Online is a Kirk or Picard (or a Janeway or Sisko, I suppose) rather than a behind-the-scenes red-shirt working their way painstakingly through the Starfleet Academy and up the ranks.

This is totally the correct way to approach this, I feel. I hate killing rats and bats.

This does seem to be a game worth getting excited about.

Totally with u Ronin regarding the "bats and rats" killing.

There was a preview in last months PC gamer, where they were given the opportunity to do a "dungeon instance"(away mission). They used wow language like tank(engineering officer) and healer(doctor) etc to describe the action. They were also allowed to try a few quests - One of them concerned going 200 years back in time!!

I do wonder how the economics of the game will work, will it have a thriving AH and trade? Will it be worthwhile doing away missions to get good loot?

There is clearly a huge appetite for this game...I find it hard to see how this game could possibly flop.

Main problem is (i assume) that because its flying around, it doesnt feel the same as conventional MMO's (As they are useally you running around going 1 on 1.)

Would still love to try it though, looks smexy.

uh. no.

it greatly lacks depth, and many of the features aren't implemented very well.(most blatantly obvious being the klingon side as a whole)

The entire game is literally just the city of X engine with new textures on top.
That's the main reason why it's not taking off - it's not been especially designed with Star Trek in mind.

"Star wars galaxies"

has more than 27 times as many people playing it than Star trek online at the moment.

I hearby offically on behalf of "the Havennet" relegate the Game "star trek online" to the most bottom part of the dustbin.

May it RIP and be remembered as the most wasted opportunity in MMORPG history.

Im suprised on how many still play it. After they fucked it up in 2005.

Star Wars fans are more into computer games than Star Trek fans, at least in my opinion.
That and SW has had Lucasarts churning out both good and rubbish games for years, but all get played.
ST hasn't had a dedicated games division...

Finished downloading the trial. And done the first few missions. Must say, It's rather good. I can see myself playing this as a second MMO.

Im thinking I may get the trial, Gombol.

I'm enjoying it really. Bought the full game (And the "Trial" is the full game, so if you buy the full game you don't need to download anything.) In a fun, helpful and freindly "Fleet" (AKA, Guild.) Too, can get you in if you get it. :3

Have they fixed the bugs and cleaned the game up now? I read awful reviews when it first came out saying it was really evident they'd rushed the game and cut corners to get it finished on time? Might download the trial and give it a whirl though.

I'm not seeing any Massive Bugs. Minus a couple of instances where the mobs bug around the spawn point (Happens rarely though.)

right. Im going to download the demo tommorow, but from what ive seen it looks very, very, very good. I shall, i suspect, be playing this alot. I used to be a big trekkie (Sad sad SAD!), and still enjoy watching them, but im not quite as anal as I was. I know Birdy likes Voyager too.

Yell if you get into it and want a "Fleet", It's a RP one but *shrug* I don't plan to RP much, if at all. FReindly bunch though (Americans sadly, so not too active during the day.)
