Blood Bowl League 3.3 Week 4

Well, that was one hell of an entertaining match.

I was pretty wary going into this match and was really hoping to pull off an upset victory. I’m not sure I’ve played Hoverdog before (I don’t think so), but both of us have won the Crunch Cup, with Hoverdog actually being the current cup holder (I won it way back in season 1). So I knew I was up against a formidable adversary.

I must say that I agree with pretty much everything that Hoverdog said. My Chaos were going down like flies, especially in the 1st half (balancing out from my match vs Panda when their armour was mithril). On the other hand, they were dodging and handling the ball like elves. Hoverdog played a slow stalling grind in the first half (aka boring playstyle) where he reduced me to about 6 players on the pitch. It almost cost him though as I sacked the carrier and managed some lucky dodges, etc. to almost get it free.

2nd half and my dice stayed with me as my Chaos skipped around the flat footed Humans. I finally remembered my Wizard too and it let me go up 2-1 with some bad dice on Hoverdogs part and Elven like agility on my part. He finally managed some nice dice in the end to do a 2 turn score and tie the match at 2-2.

I’m really happy with the result (even though I now have an AV7 Beastman) as I didn’t give myself much of a chance considering the stage the 2 teams are at. It really goes to show that hero plays sometimes can change the balance of the game.

This season has had really close matches the whole way through. Every match has been “edge of your seat” stuff. Even my 2-0 win vs Barn looked more like a 2-0 loss until I got some lucky dice. I’m really enjoying it so far. :D

I have never seen a 6-0 scoreline... EVER!

Man thats crazy stuff. Seriously nuts.

Actually, I feel quite bad now for suggesting to Lebe at the beginning of the season that he play Flings as this was a more relaxed and "easier" league. I pointed to my Flings winning the division last season as proof. He's probably just about ready to club me over the head for telling him that...

Don't worry... too little experience with flings and no inducements tend to bring disaster. Incredible is that more didnt die.

At some points I was just about to get the ball rolling or some good moves going... but Nuffle stopped me. After 3-4 TDs I think I was more worried about causing casualties to keep my Treeman in the most dangerous list of the League ! :)

The woodies did have an absurd luck considering they were playing without re-rolls most of the time. I think there wasn't a single 2 die block that was bad for them.

I consider myself lucky last season. Comrade Phil was actually in my division, but i stuffed up the playing times and in the end we got an admin'd draw (should probably have been an admin'd win to him). It seems like i got real lucky with that one.

Although from memory he was playing Lizards then. Has he rerolled as Welf? :S

He has indeed. Quite the opposite of what I've done. As an added 'weird' factor, my real name is also Phil...

He's not your brother, is he? I guess not as it doesn't make sense having brothers with the same name... Perhaps evil twin that was separated at birth? :p

He's not my brother... that would be Velaphor :D

I have the feeling Phil is also a fair bit older than I, so I'm fairly sure he's not my evil twin (or I his) :p

So myself and Xylak just played our game and it was definitely a tale of two halves, this one...

The first half started with me kicking to Xylak, and after a bit of a rumble in the middle of the park, a small gap opened up for me to get near his ball carrier (who failed its first attempt at a pickup earlier...) and nail him. The ball lands in the middle of a group of 3 of my Tomb Guardians after bouncing around on a couple of downed players... I manage to walk in and nab it with one of my two throwers, and then punch a hole in his line for the thrower to make it towards the endzone. At this point, there's two turns left - for me to score at all I had to get him further up the field faster so he wasn't blocked off too well, and a Ghoul was able to dodge away from its marker and nail that thrower. What I had managed to do, however, was get one of my Tomb Guardians nearby, together with a skeleton and another Thrower. Last turn of the half and it's possible for me to score a TD, but I have to knock down a Wight and a Skeleton, pick up the ball with my thrower, AND make two GFI rolls.

They all succeeded, thankfully, and the half ended 1-0 in my favour.

Second half starts and we both line up pretty much as we did in the first half, and after I knock a couple of his guys down on the line, manage to fail epically with a pickup, and this allowed him to create a gap by knocking down a single skeleton. He duly does this and races through to get near my thrower in the next turn.

Then in turn 11 it all went Pete Tong for me...

About a third of the way into my half, I've got the ball in one of my thrower's hands, he's surrounded by 3 friendly players, but there is a Zombie marking the thrower. One of the guarding players gets smashed in the face and ends up Badly Hurt, but passes his regen roll. This was my other thrower. Then he managed to knock another one of my players away and get in close (something I wasn't expecting him to be able to do)... he then rolls a one dice block with the Zombie on the last remaining Thrower, who also has the ball, and kills him dead. The regen roll comes up at 2, that that's a level 2 thrower down the drain :'(.

After that, I was down to 7 players on the pitch, all marked, and his ghouls were able to dance through what little defence I could muster and mess about with the ball on my endzone. I did get a small bit of fortune when he managed to fumble a pass while trying to farm some SPP, however he was able to re-pick up the ball again with one of his Ghouls and get the equaliser in on Turn 15...

I then tried to inflict some pain on the last turn as it's impossible for Khemri to score in 1 turn... and rolled a double both down result on the first block i tried, with no reroll left.

Also, the jammy git got a free reroll on all three kick off events :/

Final score 1-1.

It was a game of two halves, Barry. The alive half and the unconscious half.

I really thought I'd thrown it away when I;d lost the ball and bloke scored on the last turn of the first half. Although I'd struggled to move the ball forward at all, in fact the only time the ball was in his half was after he'd downed me and failed a pickup which bounced it over the line!

The second half really did become mine. Mucho splatarama! With added splat.

I feel lucky and relieved at a draw.
Overall... good, dirty ,bloody fun :)

dammit i've been screwed yet AGAIN by receiving too little winnings... was told I'd received 50k after the game, just logged in to buy a replacement thrower and it turns out i was only awarded 30k and now cannot afford said thrower.

sux2bme.

Fortunately I have a bye week next week so should be able to afford a replacement then, regardless....

Well Panda and I played and I'm proud to say that I continued my run of great coaching by taking my necro's to a perfect run of defeats.

Panda played brilliant in this game, and the first half was kind of horrible. I left a massive hole in my defence which he breezed through and a simple handoff was enough to open the scoring. I then received, and banked on beating up his LOS. A thrown rock took out a Golem and I was plunged into chaos. Panda capitalised, tied up my players and stroked home a second. I responded by gang-fouling out that pesky Yhetee.

Panda then kicked (with his kicker missing) and the kick landed in the corner of the endzone. By this stage I was thinking of next season, so while ideally I was looking to score quick, I was quite conservative and just tried to make sure I got some spp on the board. As it happened Panda, down on numbers, still managed to get me in a position where I almost failed to score, and I needed a 2d blitz and dodge from a wight without a reroll for the consolation TD, which felt like a win for some reason.

Strange to say in a competition where I have finished with my worst ever record, but this has been one of the better ones. (Bye week next week for me so my season is over). All three of my games were against excellent opponents, and I would rather lose games with as many twists and turns as they had than win a dull one. In any case, results pale into insignificance with my real achievement. I invented the Flesh Golem sandwich, a meaty feast best enjoyed with a mutated goat as the filling.

Thanks to everyone, it's been fun, and particularly thanks to Hoverdog, Narly and Panda, the architects of my destruction. All three of you really impressed me and were played in a good spirit, but if you could let me win occasionally I'd be really grateful. Good luck in the rest of the comp, I think whichever one of you clinches it will be a worthy champ. Honestly I don't think there's going to be much in it.

ps: you do not mess with Urrrggh fans! They'll eat your brains!

Verified.

So, did it live up to the ultraviolence tag then?

In other news, Barninho and I had our game, and it ended up 2-1 to me.

Barninho elected to kick, and I had a very good first half, and broke through the centre of his line, scoring quickly, as he did a good job of moving guys back into position, and pressuring my cage strongly. I'd hoped to stall a bit, but decided it wasn't worth the risk.

Who needs the kick skill? Narly put my kicker out for this game last week, and the rest of the team had obviously been taking lessons. The ensuing kickoff ended in near the deep left corner of Barn's half, and to add insult to injury, one of his Flesh Golems was hit by a rock, and stunned. This was fortunate for me, as it let me break through his front and flood tag his ball carrier with 2 S4 frenzy ulfwerners. This put him under pressure, and flushed him towards his left sideline, where I was able to corral him and strip the ball from his ghoul, injuring it, scoring in the dying seconds of the first half.

I was feeling fairly confident at this point, but the redundant kickoff left barn with the opportunity to make some free blocks on my players. He managed to stun the journeyman lineman, and then knock down my yeti. A craft gang foul by a zombie put the yeti out injured with a badly hurt! The zombie got sent off, but that's hardly a big deal, as Barn had plenty of subs. I was going into the second half down 2 players and the centre of my line, which was being fairly effective at persecuting the Flesh Golems!

Two key things were still in my favour though: I'd injured Barn's ball carrier, and the Ulfwerner, bless him, put the second half kickoff literally in the corner square of Barn's endzone, buying me some time. THis kick meant barn had to use his werewolf to recover the ball, as he was the only one who could reach the square, meaning for most of the second half, I didn't have to worry about the threat of a fast claw-frenzy player.

The second half was a nailbiter, as I desperately tried to use my numerically inferior team to hold Barninho in check. The remaining members of Sturm and Drink were heroic, flushing the werewolf from one side to the otherto try and waste time, eventually, after another one of my players went off the pitch, Barn created a gap big enough to make a handoff to a wight. I tagged it with a player and blitzed him, but only managed a push.

Barninho blitzed with his ball carrier and made a dodge to bury the ball in the endzone to score a well earned TD, and finish the game 2-1.

This game taught me some valuable lessons about defending with less players than the opponent.

All I know is, the smack was well and truly "laid down" as you young'uns say.
Both sides were unrelenting and did not shy away from attempting to turn the opposition into compost.
I do think, though, that my lovely Undeads triumphed on that score :)

And although my special flea-flicker play - referred to previously as "Xylaks SPP farming" :p (ok, I thought I'd get a few extra points, shut up, go avay) - didn't pay off, my main Ghoul scored a TD to get enough to level up.. wahay!

wasn't a huge amount of violence in the first half, I must admit, however there was plenty in the second half and I was on the receiving end of most of it, including my poor thrower who is now deader than dead :(

The fact that you know what a flea flicker is warms my permafrost heart.

Well 1-0 to myself against Kasatka. Was a tough game even with Kasatka having some really bad luck, if it wasn't for the Norse block he'd have been on the floor alot more and i would have got an other touchdown =[.
I wish the game could have been a little more even on luck but that is the way of BB.

The one and only good news of the match... Jenna Jameson (the only female fling in the team) got +1 Agility ! :D

You should have won the match vs me. And I reckon you would have if you had rolled a 3+ (when you sacked my ball carrier and the wolf went in to pick it up). As it was you missed the pickup, i was able to recover and score - taking me 1-0 up.

I think you were also unlucky with the bye-match being on your last week and the admin'd draw that should have been a win. But as you say, at least you invented the Flesh Golem sandwich (which i was unfortunate enough to experience). And your team should be strong for next season.

It seems that the title of division 3 champ will therefore come down to the final match day (between myself, Snap, Panda and Hoverdog). Can i suggest that if snap doesn't make a comeback, i be given an admin'd draw, seeing as Barn was given that and i believe everyone who played Snap drew with him. I think thats the fairest option.

@ Lebe - why did you name one of your Flings JJ? What are the other ones names? And an AG4 Fling is totally awesome. I also got 1 from the last match of last season. It virtually guarantees you a TD (2+ TTM, 3+ landing and maybe a 2+ gfi and your in).

Narly... you haven't seen my team then ?! :D

They are all male porn actor names. Team name: "Sausage Wavers". The trees are "Black Power" & "I have a Wood". But since they were doing so badly I decided to throw Jenna Jameson in the mix and it seems to have worked out !

As for TTM should I attempt to throw shorter to be safer ? Never really figured out these numbers... not a single attempt has resulted in sucessful landing when the fling had the ball.
