Fallout: New Vegas

I say it's more about shooting, and following a story with side quests. Just 'cause it has an inventory / equip system doesn't make it "all about roleplaying"

....It's all about the role-playing, hence the game being an RPG based game.
I would call TF2 an FPS, but I guess you'd call it a game about dressing your character up in different hats...

Read this before you reply next time, pay special attention to the first line. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fallout_(video_game)

Its made by the guys from the original development team for Fallout 1 + 2 thus is awesome. They managed to claw the rights back from crapthesda soft.
Bethesda still has the rights to the franchise, and as a publisher they can hire whoever they want to develop any further games.

Besides, based on Obsidian's current track record, their involvement seems to make things the exact opposite of awesome...

Yeah. I don't really care what the developers intended. It's a shooter game with RPG elements.

Also: Dev's intend for games to be like somthing -all- the time, they never end up like it. And people don't see it that way. First thing I thought when I saw a video of Fallout 3: "FPS", I'm sure alot of you who have never heard of Fallout would do the same, tbh.

The games not for everyone, it's all about the role-playing i like to watch TV and play it cos then the game doesn't get boring as fast lol.

You see, if you have to do something ELSE while playing the game in order to keep yourself entertained, well...that's not good design.

If it looks like shit, smells like shit, and tastes like shit, odds are, it probably IS shit.

I hope most ppl who post in a thread about Fallout would know a little about fallout and not just commented on it with no knowledge of the game, tbh.

I always thought that cos of the travelling, WoW was a flight simulator with MMORPG elements.

Your comment implies that shit is a bad thing.
TBH I do get pissed off with some parts of the game like shooting into a rock in VATS for 3 minutes lol, but I've always liked RPG games and I'm such a fan of the old story lines and history of the FO world.

Shooter with RPG elements = TF2. Almost all the gameplay is based around shooting; you don't communicate with NPCs, have a storyline, or various "traits" which affect the way your character plays. Merely various weapons and various roles. Typical shooter. However, it does have a progression system in the form of unlockable items, which in a lot of cases are better than the stock ones, so you have RPG elements in terms of customisation and a "levelling system".

How can you even claim Fallout isn't an RPG primarily?
The game allows you to custom build a character, changing their looks, their stats, traits, etc. You have to then play the game a specific way based on the traits you pick, hell - you don't even have to shoot anyone, you can just talk your way out of everything if you go down a social route. Name me another "shooter" where you don't shoot anything. Go on, just one.

Seriously Gombol, you make some of the most ridiculous comments known to man.

It's an RPG with the primary form of combat (and thus a large proportion of the game) being shooting. Are you claiming that Oblivion is just as non-RPG because it focuses on melee combat and magic? Not making much sense lately Gombol.

One question for Fallout new vegas. Are you funny?

Seriously i'm not joking. Fallout 1 and 2 had some of the funniest and darkest humour i think i've ever seen in an rpg game. Fallout 3 (while i did like it) was a stotic faced gritty end of the world scenario. Save for the last bit with liberty prime the game felt like it had no soul.

So is it a good rpg? Couldnt care less i have tonnes of good rpgs if i want to play one i'll pull one down from the conveniently placed shelf next to my desk.
Is it a witty, funny and at times black hearted rpg? In my eyes much better question.

Tbh with you I haven't got very far into the story line to say how dark it is, it's already been a lot darker then FO3 that's for sure. However whether it can stand up to the originals I don't know yet. Will defiantly update you if it get it's old humour back.

The depiction of night-kin as schizophrenic from excessive stealth-boy usage, an entire faction based around Elvis worship (without even knowing the guys name!), an upgraded pip-boy, the pimp-boy - a gold, diamond encrusted affair, the Wacky Wasteland perk that adds in a tonne of zany items, including the Holy Hand Grenade and Alien Blaster amongst others.
Yeah, its far more tongue in cheek than Fallout 3 was, and so is much closer to the original. It also has several characters either directly in the originals, or descended from.

There is a perk specifically designed to add a random, daft element to the game. There is a much better storyline basis than what FO3 had, much more diverse in terms of factions you can side with and a better overall game in my opinion than FO3.

To end the argument about RPG, Shooter or whatever. If you truly know games or have actually played through a game critically (ie, not just playing through it, but analysing it in it's entirity) then you would know that there are very few games left that can be stuck on the 'Shooter' or 'RPG' genres without diversing into sub-genres, such as FPSRPG, which incidentally is the subgenre FO3 and New Vegas fall under. It is not a 'pure' shooter game, which in itself is an extreme rarity these days. It is neither a 'pure' RPG game, although a lot of it's structure does rely on RPG elements. To call it one or the other 'main' genre is a misguided judgement best saved for children whom don't know any better.

No one said it was just an RPG... Psi said it was an action RPG, Huung and myself said it was and RPG with FPS elements. Even Gombol said that it was an FPS with RPG element, wrong as he maybe, not a single person has said it is one or the other.

I did a mission where I had to recruit a sex bot for a brothel and got to try it out beforehand. It's pretty funny. And highly arousing.

Once again, mass effect has character development and is plot heavy, so im glad is an FPRPGS and not a shooter or action game. Fallout, you can play from third person, you can melee, shoot, talk, sneak or explode your way through problems...
