Grand Theft Auto IV

I read a bit of it. The bit I read doesn't really give much information, just about little gameplay tidbits.

I'm now in "any information is too much information" mode. I risk reading something about a gameplay mechanic that doesn't quite work or something like that and end up looking for this quirk instead of enjoying the experience. Better to get the initial rush then come back to the review, especially as I've pre-ordered.

Okay well...

NICO BELIC FORMS A COMMUNIST PARTY IN LIBERTY CITY AND THEN GOES TO WAR WITH THE CAPITALIST PARTY AND LOSES.

Eurogamer have posted their review. I refuse to read it. I've not even gone to the page, just grabbed the link. The game will turn up, it'll be excellent, so why on earth would I spoil it with a review?

Right, and if you're looking to avoid any minor spoilers, best to avoid that review:

We don't feel guilty about imparting this, because GTA IV is rich enough that we can afford to fritter away a few of its very minor reveals.

*Rubs his hands together in anticipation.*

Yeah, mine also said that. But don't get three excited, because I just got an email stating that it had been posted today. Stupid misleading order history!

Also, I didn't read the review either. I've already bought it, reading the review now would do nothing for me except influence my opinion over the game so I'll just wait a little bit longer to find out just how good it really is ...

Me too Tetsuo! They proccessed and took my GTA off my outstanding orders on play.com last wednesday, but didn't actually post it until this morning according to the email!

Damn play! I thought they loved me .

Things people do to get a game... oh, hang on, things I do to get a game.

So, Amazon didn't bother to tell me that my preorder wouldn't be turning up 'til mid next week. Yes, 8th of May, apparently. Late night research told me that if I preordered after 9th April then in all likelihood I wasn't going to get the game on release day. Sucks.

So I scouted around last night to figure out if any other online retailer was going to be in better condition; they weren't. Everyone had sold out or didn't reveal stock details.

This morning I woke suddenly with a memory of something I'd read; last time GTA was on a release embargo the company that broke that embargo was Argos. Inspired, I checked out the Argos stores in York and voila, one had a copy. Reserved, speedily cycled into town, arrived for 09:05, grabbed the very last unreserved copy.

Hurrah!

Does mean that I'll have a spare copy turning up mid next week if anyone would like one?

We'll I'm never pre-ordering anything from Play.com. Pre-ordered it at the start of February and it's still not here on the release day...epic fail.

I'm finding that my post is coming around 12:30 these days, after the change over from twice-a-day post to once-a-day post. Might be yet to arrive?

That said, given that you're that far back on the pre-order stack you'd have thought you'd have priority...

I got bills in about half an hour ago....just not a brown paper bag with a play.com sticker on it.

Infuriating, that (for me, also, because it means I won't have it today either), but I try not to let it get to me. I sympathise in some ways, I doubt Play would let down their customers deliberately; it was just unlucky for us that the release date was two days after a weekend. If they'd posted on Saturday, chances are it'd have been delivered on Monday (early). Their only option was to post yesterday or face the wrath of Take 2, which probably wasn't an attractive choice.
Even if it does arrive late, I'm not going to let one or two days of missed playtime upset me since, well, it is only one or two days of play time. Although I'm disappointed that it hasn't arrived today, you have to ask yourself - what is the tangible benefit of getting it 24 hours earlier? Are you even going to care in a week's time once you have it in your hands? Is it going to affect your enjoyment of the game all that much? With those thoughts, I manage to restrain myself from smashing the nearest window :p
