THN Book club.

I was reading a book last night, and, as usual, remembered quite how much I enjoy reading books.

I was wondering if people would be interested in an online 'book club', where we take it in turns to suggest a book to read, and then do the usual discussions afterwards, maybe one a month, or one every two months? I don't know how quickly people get through books, I suspect I get through them rather more rapidly than others, so I'm willing to be flexible on the deadline length.

I think it's probably likely that we share similar interests and taste in books, but that we've probably not always read exactly the same books as each other.

I guess that as some basic rules, I'd suggest fiction only, with a page limit set around 400-500, no books in the middle of an ongoing series. No mammoth slogs and no 'short essays of samuel peeps' or anything like that. Preferably stuff that people may not have read, so no suggestions of Lord of the Rings, the Hobbit, Harry Potter, the da Vinci Code etc (threw up a little in my mouth at the thought of Dan Brown). I guess I'd also prefer not to be suggeted 'Halo - Master Chief masters reading, and chiefing' and other such spin offs, though would be willing to take a vote if people REALLY DESPERATELY wanted to read that stuff.

Obviously this would require some commitment, but it may require no more commitment in time than you already spend reading books.

Is there any interest at all?

I'm very interested in this, I love to read but often find I don't as much as I'd like due to a lack of source of good things to read.

Just created us a group on goodreads.com, seems like a good tool for this kind of thing. I've no issue at all with cross-linking content from either goodreads to here or here to goodreads. It'll also help me keep my "to-read" lists in one place :)

Thank you, that looks very useful.

this is something that would interest me but I'm a VERY slow reader...

We can discuss length of time before we start. Do you think you could finish a 400 page book in 1 month? 2 months?

That's exactly what this could help with!

I am interested myself as i have not read anything in a few months, will there be time given to get books ordered from the library?

I suspect that there will be time for this, yes.

Having worked at a library between the ages of 16-20, I know it can take a couple of weeks to order stuff in, but not normally longer than that, though it can depend on the library.

If lots of people are feeling they might be slow, or want to use the library for this, I'd suggest a book every 2 months?

6 books a year hardly seems like much of a challenge, and if we tear through one, then we can always start on the next selection.

Two months Sounds great, for a good 400pg book i can get it read in a weekend, but as you said, getting it from the library is half a month.

As to suggesting books, i would suggest that rather than restricting ourselves to 2 months for a 400 page book, create a template based on something like this example:

100-300: 1 month
300-499: 2 months

So that we can choose books that take half the time to read if it comes up. I am completely clueless regarding selection, as i mostly just read fiction (suitable for ALL ages), Some well known titles would be nice, eg Moby Dick

Now not that i know what books you are thinking of, i've got Catch 22 and Hitch hikers guide sat in my book pile :p

Any of those 3 books would be fine, assuming moby dick isn't too long. I'm trying to keep an open mind. What I'd plan to do is for each member to suggest a book, either that they've read and think everyone should read, or one that they want to read.

This sounds like an awesome idea.

Personally I'm all for skipping books that have already been made into a movie:)

I'd be in for this. I'll go back to what I did when I was 10, and have multiple books on the go at once in order to continue the series I'm on at the moment, too. :D
