Had the beta for a while but didn't get on with it. Been reading a bit about it recently and feel I should give it another go.

Anyone play that wants to show a noob what to do?

Thought i'd put out some feelers again as there seem to be a fair few invites going out atm.

Anyone got it? Anyone wanna play?

I'm desperate to get into this game. I'm on the hunt for a coach atm too.

I've just received a beta invite but I'm (really) short on play time just now. I'd like a look to understand what it is and does. Been reading Eurogamer's ongoing series about learning DotA2, which has been interesting, but I feel simultaneously fascinated and horrified in my current lack of experience.

I believe there'll be another part to this next week.

Those really cracked me up, especially the part about the donkey, and they kind of cut to the main bundle of issues with learning the game. - Huge amounts of (probably unnecessary) jargon making it very hard to get to grips with what is supposedly a very very deep game. Considering we can't even seem to get 4 players together for wargame, I think it seems unlikely that this would be easy to implement at THN.

I think the trouble is that there's no real world analogy for multi-lane tower defence or the roles that people fill to successfully approach the game. I guess, in that, it's like American Football; it's a game with a specific set of rules that requires one to play in a particular way and that can only be properly referred to by understanding the difference between a Tight End and an Offensive Line Backer, or a Safety and a Defensive Tackle.

So I don't (yet) know whether they're unnecessary, but learning the language for the game is doubtless part of how one cooperates with others who play.

Ive dabllbed in this with some of the old Northrend Exposure (Wow) crew. It is a fun game but punishes inexperience bigtime.

I've not looked at Ronin's links but here is my feel for the game.

Best bet is to try a few games against bots. I must admit I have not played any against real players yet :D

There is alot of different characters, alot of different items and it can seem confusing at first.

Both Dota2 and League of Legends are similar, the aim of the game is to take down the main citadel on the other side of the map. But there are towers in your way. You have computer generated mobs called "creep" which go along 3 lanes to take down these towers.

For every person/mob you kill you get gold and experience. The gold gives you better gear the experience you use to upgrade and select 5 skills. One of which is an ultimate skill which makes each character OP when used but has a long cooldown.

Games tend to have 3 phases. At the start you farm the opposite teams creep without getting ambushed and killed. Since you get more money for killing your opponents if you are newer to the game there is a tendancy to be farmed by the opposition if you are not careful and an early lead in money and exp is hard to get back.

Mid phase people start getting kitted out and get most of their skills. This tends to become more about working as a team to take out the opposition players. By combining skill or ambushing with greater numbers you can get ahead in the money and exp. Also by taking down the towers you can push them back to their base.

End phase is all about who got the most kills and is ahead. The push into the base is then brutal and taking down the main base.

There is other stuff about types of character you use, but it is fun and worth giving a try. :)

That's probably more reasonable than I'd like to admit. The choice of names for these things, as ever unfortunately, leaves much to be desired.

I imagine this would be your sort of game, Angelic? Given your previous League of Legends interest...
I...yes, I like MOBAs.

Currently I'm curious about Super MNC, which I played a couple games of and I like the FPS part of it quite a bit. It's very engaging and the humour and style of the game really helps it along.

DOTA2 seems...quite polished, but also with a pretty harsh learning curve. But I guess it's mostly just about getting the builds down and learning the heroes, everything else is mostly transferrable from LoL and the like.

So, Ronin, I encourage you to play a game or four against bots, it's really not very hard to grasp, especially if you have a general knowledge of what you're supposed to be doing.

I wouldn't recommend the articles on eurogamer as a source of knowledge, they are mostly journalism, rather than guides. They read well, all credit to the author, but as far as learning the game goes, you'd be better off reading some of the dota2 wiki, playing against bots or a coop match with some of us :)

As for the jargon, it's really very simple :) I could explain pretty much all of it, if you have any questions, but then again google can do that for you even faster!

So, yeah. We can do a coop match :) If people are interested.

How long did the betas take to come through?
Like two or three months for me, I'd say.

Thanks for that, Angelic. I'll give it a try against bots.

And Panda, it might be available for real before you get in the beta... ;)

My pleasure :)
Also, I plan on playing some more tonight, around the 11pm CEST and later, if you fancy a game. I'm not sure, however, about whether DOTA2 is a good MOBA to start with. Maybe LoL would be more fun? I havent really played enough dota to elaborate on the differencies, but it FEELS different. A bit more colorful fun. Less serious. If you're more into that...

LoL is definitely less serious.

DoTA 2 is very much aimed at the competitive market. I've been in the beta since quite early on but it was too daunting for me to spend any time with. As mostly in the beginning it was pro players.

As the beta is opening up a lot more now the playing field should hopefully have leveled a bit. I mainly play bots and I haven't finished a full game tbh.

I've been asking around for a bit of coaching from other players so hopefully I'll have a better understanding soon

Definitely up for some games though so feel free to add me on steam.
