Aliens vs Predator

Gombol, did you ever actually play Alien Vs Predator (now Classic) or AvP2?

Each race had distinct classes for certain roles, you couldn't really create a one man Army for anything, unless you were playing with the Queen and Alice mechs...

AvP is essentially a re-make of AvP Classic, but looking amazing.

Can't comment on how people play the game, but it used to work pretty well back in the day of dial up gaming.

Yep, but not online, i played it a few months back.

But still, how can people work as a "Team" when 99% of the time in FPS's they do their own thing? Granted, im exactly like that on MW2 and back in the day, CSS etc etc. But im looking forward to see how much fail the "supposed to" bes online will be, i cant see anyone working as a team unless they all use mics, and restrict the amount of types of weapons people can use in a game.

Hell, 1 pred per game would be awsome, but i can see people spamming them due to the fact "AMG ITS PREDATOR! HES SO AWSOME!". Already got my class im going to spam picked out, and its Alien, i got all my tactics in my head, and how im going to play online, there are some unknown factors in my game plan, as in, controls, how the guns shoot, and how slow or fast the aliens melee is.

Really am hoping AVP online will be epic, and not full of campers who hide in a corner waiting for somthing to move / go into their Line of Sight, like they do on MW2, and other FPS's, i know it will happen to some degree (Group of Marines defending a room? Sounds fun to try and infiltrate.) but not like " *Hides between a locked door and a long tunnel* I SEE SOMTHING! *Sprays*" Know what im saying?

'Scuse double post, but. Watched some gameplay of it, it looks rather epic, apart from that lone marine fighting off an alien attack. And an alien running around solo. But seeing as it was a Trailer and developers made it / played it, doesnt say much to what its really going to be like.

AHHHHHHHHHH its got multiplayer support!!!!!!

AVP classic just went live! I propose merriment and joy followed by bloodcurdling screams in the darkness! Anyone want a game of this for old times sake just give me a bell.

Seriously though gombol i see your point. Human nature being what it is and all. But my first clan was AVP gold way back when and while the calibre and quality of gamers in the net has deteriorated somewhat (present company excluded of course) the AVP classes are all still suited to the way we play games nowadays even if the analogies arent obvious.

The alien. Most recent synonym = Teleporting knife witch (modern warfare 2).

Is there a better example of how adept some people are at running around really fast and stabbing people to death than the sheer effortless murder that occurs on a daily basis in MW2 perpetrated by the class effectivly named the teleporting knife witch. Only now with aliens they are faster and able to run up walls and onto ceilings. Aliens have always played this way, crazed depraved murderers who are willing, when in large numbers, to sacrifice themselves for the greater good of the queen. Squishy xenomorphs cant feasibly play the hide and seek game as well as you'd think, what with the scurrying noises they make and the screaming when they jump about and the predator visor mode that makes them stand out like a sore thumb. They run fast, hit hard and die quickly. Such is the existence of a creature born in someones stomache.

The predator. Synonym. Depending on weapon. Sniper with the speargun (any game with a sniper) Spy/Rogues with the wrist blade (TF2/rpgs). The ninja when using the warspear (Metal Gear Solid). Guybrush Threepwood when using the shoulder cannon (The point and click adventure tales of monkey island) And asshole when using the disk (every game ever).

What can you say. The predator kills who he wants, when he wants with what he wants. He can even heal himself after a few scrapes to continue the slaughter. Hes a swiss army knife of kebaberry and your brain meats are on special. Your worry about not having to specialise with the predator is off. You do need to prepare for what you about to face and when.

1.The world of AVP is a dark nightmarish place and if you want to see anything with the pred you have to switch visor modes between infa red for humans, and crazy ass white vision for aliens. Pick the wrong one and you get butchered by the enemy you couldnt see very well. Plus lock on weapons like the disk and the cannon dont lock when in the wrong visor mode for the target. Its that simple really.
2. Have fun LOL HAI on the aliens, tail attack outreaches wristblades and the thing your stabbing is made of acid. Aliens will be last laughing any wristblade happy stabbers.

Your silent hunter persona about the predator is wrong unfortunately. Aliens still know where you are when cloaked. We see your life! Theres also the motion sensor(useless) which might save your bacon. The stealth'n'stab your silent groaning about is probably still on the cards in a big way though. Stabbing people from behind has a long and illustrious history, who are we to complain if aliens start doing it to us.

The marine. Synonym. Redshirts (star trek).

Your 'designed to' section for marines is spot on how they should act, also your worries are completely justified. But thats not a bad thing. The moment you spawn your ass belongs to any number of horrors lurking in the shadows. Your only hope of surviving more than a few terror filled seconds is either of the following

1. Pick a direction and run. Hope you pick right and the aliens are going to have to chase you. Pick wrong and its crapaccino
2. Find the smartgun! Yay! You only prolong the inevitable though. Die horribly when it runs out of bullets.
3. Group up. Notice i use the word 'group' there isnt really any formation terminology in this sort of group. Its more of a safety in numbers kind of deal. The aliens snag one of you the rest of the group are their to kill it and take the ammo from the marines corpse. Pray it wasnt you.

No plan ever survives contact with the enemy. When your enemies are invisible killing machines designed specifically to be wearing your shiny skull on thier belts before you even fire your gun or a legion of monstrous abominations from beyond the stars who wants to beat you up and then have sex with you i think anyone of those 3 options is perfectly viable.

'Kay, well. Just played the AVP demo.

First impressions: My comp sucks.

Second impressions: WoW, Sexy.

Third impressions: I was right. People only care about their kills, and -WILL- kill their own teammates for a kill. Seriously, i look at what killed me, and it was a pulse rifle, and i had -JUST SPAWNED-. Learn to have Freindly Fire turned off please.

I'm a big fan of friendly fire as it really differentiates servers in terms of quality.

Yes you'll get the nab servers where everyone shoots each other repeatedly 24 hours a day, but you'll also find server that use friendly fire to discriminate against new players and you end up getting kicked if you're not careful. That usually weeds out the player base and leaves the quality players which makes for a good experience.

My experiences of all of this are based on CS though.

In response to this, any chance of getting ourselves set up with an AvP server? (provided ofcourse it's not match making ... *shudders*

Current style is matchmaking. Might change in the real game though.

It's a server list, I thought? Either way, I join through Steam friends, so it's super easy.

So far, it's a bit meh, but I guess it'll be a different story when playing with friends :) (and on a better map...)

When i played it (the demo) it was matchmaking.

Predators seem limited to 2 a match though, so im happy.

Steam Forums

The following is a press release from Rebellion Developments Ltd:

Quote:
We've identified an issue with the matchmaking system that is causing the very long wait times to get into a PC game, and hope to release an update shortly which addresses this.

In the meantime players can ease connection issues by getting together with a group of players before entering matchmaking. Inviting friends or joining players via the Steam overlay will help work around the issue. If you need help finding players you can join one of the community groups, e.g. http://steamcommunity.com/groups/AVPI.

In addition to the matchmaking functionality the full game features dedicated servers, server browsers, and the ability to host games directly

So Demo is match making, Full game is dedicated :)

They only noticed it with the PC version? I normally gotta wait 10-20 mins for a game on the Ps3.

Well in the new one its kinda greyish i guess so i'm kinda right.

Matchmaking is fixed btw, was done yesterday surprised no one else noticed (or everyone posts to gripe but no one comes bearing good news anymore) Matchmaking takes literally less than 30secs for pc users and i'm hoping similar for our console counterparts.

Theres still 13 days left! too many days between me and AVPnesss!

Nope, still bad on Console, 99% of the time im stuck into a 1v1 whitch isint too fun (in my opinion.) Wish my comp could handle it so i could play with you guys. Oh well, one day...

Panda with issues...

So far this is a massive disappointment. Slower in pace generally, less frenzied. Alien doesnt seem to work anywhere near as fluidly as previously. A few minutes of play on the original ensured that my opinion was not in any way biased by rose tinted glasses. It's still better.

I have to concur with Panda on this one.

This reeks of being a console shooter cross-platform released onto PC. (Yes i was playing the PC demo).

Controls and clunky and unresponsive, the levels seem almost randomly designed and try to allow all 3 races to play as much as possible. Marines can't seem to do anything - even the smart gun is rubbish at helping you get kills. Aliens blend into the scenery well, which is something they didn't do so much in previous games, but preds tend to make so much noise they are easy to spot and attack.

One thing i loved about AVP2 was that you had some marine vs alien maps, some pred vs marine maps etc. And you could disable certain classes or weapons combos. Not to mention it was infinitely moddable :D

I've been playing marines and consistently getting 1st place on the leaderboards for games, smartgun is rubbish, yes. However you don't need it, the pulse rifle is more than adequate at the job
