Next up on my list of things to try (now that I have a working well, can abuse water diffusion and have chained all my camels in one room to see if they will breed - they don't need food, do they?!) is military, hunting and advanced food processing (like cooking, cheesemaking, butchering and stuff like that) :)

Tamed animals will breed on their own, but not if they're in a cage. Unsure if chaining them up has the same effect.

Hoy, :)

Hunting used to be buggy as all hell, but if you're using 31.12, it's actually rather smooth. The one problem with it is, if there's no wildlife, your hunter will sit around idle and you might not immediately realize why.

The presence or absence of wildlife can b easily checked using the "u" key. For "U"nits. Yes, the one key that isn't listed on the main menu...

Grmbl...

J.

... chained all my camels in one room to see if they will breed ...

as far as i know, animals don't even need to be near eachother to breed. remote breeding :)

this little 'feature' is what made my, ehm, "meat machine", work smoothly

What are we going to do for our starting build? Lots of booze is an absolute necessity. You get booze and a barrel leftovert to fill with more booze. :)

It really isn't that important, assuming you have plants to gather.

But the double whammy of not having to worry about you alcohol supply immediately and an absolute shit ton of barrels saves a lot of wood.

Oh noez kobold archers killed my military clad in chainmail and shields and stuff :(

Anyway, I'm trying out the newest version now, rather than the old one provided with the tutorials, because I feel I can find my way around the game now using wiki heavily. I grabbed some pregenerated world that looked nice and it's kinda...new...but we'll see how it goes. Can't wait for the game with you masterminds :)

Hoy, :)

So I'm traipsing along on my various test runs of DF, when all of a sudden, I see an anouncement that some random dwarf drowned. Apparently, he was "training" next to a murky pool and inexplicably fell in...

There were no hostiles or wild animals anywhere near the training area, either... :S

Go figure. :D

My mason duly proceeded to build a floor over the pool, so that this particular bit of fun doesn't happen again...

Cheers,
J.

Another option would've been to channel on the edge of the pool, which would leave ramps for the dwarves to climb out.

Just wait until you're playing in a cold climate where the dwarves insist on walking around on frozen pools that are about to melt. :D

Yeah, okay, I'll look at this this weekend, providing my cold lifts up and I recover from 2 days on site with practically no sleep in between (due to utterly crap hotel, not work).

So, not forgotten this, but have been waiting for the updated release of Mike Mayday's graphical edition, which was released today.

I'll take some time to check that 0.31.14 is actually safe to use and doesn't, y'know, just explode into flame or something. Assuming all is well (even numbered releases tend to bode well) then I'll opt for that build and fire up an official sign up thread and post details on swapping saves, the correct DFG build, etc, etc.

By the by, I absolutely intend to use Dwarf Therapist and heartily recommend you do too. Unless you're a masochist, of course.

Aaaaah, s'true, I still had 0.5.7, from the beginning of the thread... :D

K, then, I'm ready to go, you know, whenever... :)
