So, welcome to Iddolush, also known as Rockborn.
Sorta disappointed that my previous overseership ended so catastrophically, so I decided to actually launch into this new place with a chance of building us safety for the future.

No messing about. Straight into the earth with us. There is a flat region at the foot of the valley where the river flows, and then some very steep cliffs. We'll dig into the foot of the hills in the valley and work up from there. Not much wood, but enough to get us started. Going to design with security in mind from the beginning, though we'll probably have a season go by without having any serious protection.

Dormitory is dug, with two doors and beds. This'll be the guardroom later, but it'll serve dual purpose for a time.
1 Hematite (Beginning of Summer)
Almost completed digging out the initial fortress. Soil to the north made that a bit quicker, as planned, and should provide a site for the first underground farms using the pool drainage for irrigation. Shortly should be setting up the first dining hall.
25 Malachite
Promoted the expedition leader to broker and the doctor to chief medical dwarf and book keeper. I realise the doctor probably shouldn't be doing all that, but we're shorthanded just now so he'll have to stretch to it. Besides, he's not doing anything else of any use except hauling stuff, just now.
Got the dining hall set up and pulling everything inside quickly. Just got to pull carpentry and the wood pile into the rock and then I'll have space to drawbridge the main entrance and we'll be pretty secure.
2 Galena
7 migrants have arrived. Let's see what we've got here... Frankly, the fish cleaner seemed like he was going to be a total waste of space, but it turns out he can turn his hand to just about any cultivation art; he can stay. Fairly useful lot, all in all, and no horrid children to make a mess of things.
Oh, by the by, the "peasant" Kib Ilidlogem has been brought along for his fighting skills; fairly basic, so far, but he'll be heading up the militia when we get that started. Having said that, the otherwise useless soapmaker is also a bit of a military guy. They'll have to collaborate.
19 Galena
Drawbridge at front gate, protected by channelled and cleared pit at front so that an attacker can only access bare rock when the drawbridge is raised. I feel safer. Not safe, mind you, but safer. Lever is in the north west corner of the dining room.
18 Moonstone (Winter)
Traders and the liaison arrived a few weeks back. Been busy trading, digging, flooding, etc. Underestimated the quantity of reservoir space we'd need. Made a bit of a mess but nothing serious. Two 5x5 reservoirs ready for wells.
Stone-fall traps cover the main entrance, with more being added back to the first doors. Needing more furniture storage space so expanding to account for that.
Also need dedicated rooms now. Population 22, but still in barracks.
5 Opal
A Potter has been possessed. Bones and leather and skin, oh yes. Or no, in fact. Claimed a craft workshop. Guess he'll be going berzerk...
24 Opal
Very late in the year, but underground farming is now underway. Four plots on various rotations covering much of the underground crop possibilities. Still need some above ground plots, probably near the pasture outside the main gate, but that should be constructed after external defenses.
18 Obsidian
As predicted, the potter went insane, though fortunately not berzerk. He'll be hanging around the dining room spouting gibberish, I guess. Started work on major extensions for living quarters, workshops and storage piles. Avoiding vertical shafts as much as possible due to problems in defending them. Suggest future overseers use ramps and buffer zones with drawbridges between levels.
No military in training yet, partly because we need the civilians out of the dormitory / barracks-to-be. Once they're out, some beds can be removed and the barracks will be ready to go. Need more real bedrooms, though.

And Spring is here again. Bedrooms are still being carved from the rock. Food and booze supplies are sufficient for now. Suggest my successor focuses on civilian accommodations, training a military and getting smelting and weapon manufacturing underway. Current population is still 22, with no injuries or casualties.
Oh, water source is now the well in the underground farms.
