It's just not Civ without a bloke to fight off the AI while we wallow in the stoneage ... how about Friday night?

That review by eurogamer sums up why i won't be taking part in Civ5.
I see what you mean - it really can turn into clicking away large amounts of turns - they should do something about that. However, that is mostly in the earlier parts of the game - later on you have tons of things to do, so you'll be likely to have decisions to make every each turn.

Having played a bit this morning I was pretty disappointed by the number of wasted turns I was clicking through. I was also disappointed by how long it took to decide what the AI was doing. I mean, fair enough, late game when there are loads of units and stuff, but early on, where most stuff doesn't exist, or it is extending a progress bar? Really?

I agree with this. It did get a bit annoying. Along with the uber agressive AI (Russia suddenly went "You're taking too much land. WAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" and attacked me.) Fair enough, that's part of a "war" civilisation, but it was done in like, turn 30 or so. (They took 2 citys. I made peace, made a massive army, and wiped the Ruskies out!)

I found that happened with every Civ game ever. Decisions you make at this point, though certainly fewer of them, will affect the game later on.

I haven't played it yet but I'm really not seeing that as an issue - aside from expansion the game never really started happening until you got out of the BC years anyway

Yeah, I've played the demo and it seemed a bit slow but it's the same in Civilisation IV too. Will give the game proper a try when I get home.

We still playing tonight?

Shall we say 7.30pm? I'll figure out how to host in that time, plus it gives me a chance to get home from work, cook something and have a lil play myself :)

Played a quick hour there. I'm not having problems with the early turns being a End Turn click fest as there are plenty of barbarians around to knock out. I'm playing as Bismarck and when I take an encampment there's a certain chance I'll convert some barbarians to my side meaning I can send one unit over to a continent and create a nice snowball effect. An army in no time. :)

Half seven suits me! I'm well chuffed with Japan's unique trait, units always attack and defend at full power even when damaged. Banzaiii Nobunaga-san!
